Lully: Persee, a Lovely Spectacle and Poignant Love Story
Marshall Pynkoski's Staging of Jean Baptiste Lully's "Persee" on DVD
1.The music is absolutely divine. If you have any inclination toward Renaissance/Early Baroque music in general, you will be amply rewarded with a fine score that features many a variety of solos, duets, trios, ensemble and ballet numbers. A couple of supporting characters have some tuning problems in this production, but the principles more than make up for it.
2.The story is awesome. Come on, we're talking "Clash of the Titans" here, from Perseus and Medusa, to the battle with the Kraken over the chained up body of Andromeda. You couldn't ask for more.
3.The empathy exhibited between the pair of women who both fall in love with Perseus is quite poignant, and Perseus' willingness to die for Andromeda if she love him or no is quite endearing and charming. The intended of Andromeda is scum and deserves to lose her.
4.The dancers are top notch and the choreography is very entertaining and novel in some cases. I love the ballet fencing!
5.They've taken great pains to recreate the splendor of the French court with refined period costumes, a flying machine for Hermes, a walking-stalking Kraken and other bits of stage wizardry.
6.Medusa is played by a Baritone! Awesome.
It probably could have ended fine after act four, but it is great fun in any case! Check it out.
