Lunar Lunacy: the Effect of the Moon on Our Mood

Magena Fawn
A full moon event happens when the sun and the moon are on opposite sides of the earth. The sight of a full moon may evoke eerie feelings due to ancient lore surrounding its trans-formative powers on mankind. In America, we have all seen the televised images of man morphing into a werewolf under a full moon. In other societies man is portrayed as transforming into other beasts such as the lion and goat. Some say that suicide, murder, domestic violence and other violent crimes rise during a full moon event. Does the event of the full moon truly have a mood altering effect on the inhabitants of earth? If so, it would not be an excuse to commit crime but more of a reason to stay meditative and focused.

There are some reports that psychiatric wards and emergency rooms see increased activity during full moon events. The rise in accidental injury and even women giving birth during a full moon has been a curiosity for many who believe there is a link between the full moon and strange phenomenon. Could the gravitational changes that occur with lunar events really influence the mood of some people on earth? When the sun and the moon are in a line with earth, the tides are higher. Just as the moon tugs up tides from the sea; could it also have a biological effect on our physical body? We already know of the moon's gravitation pull on water; interestingly the human body is made up of 80 percent water.

Police in the UK have linked aggressiveness with the full moon. They report that the behaviors in people who drink alcohol tend to worsen during the full moon. A decade ago, there was a three-month psychological study of inmates at Armley jail in Leeds. The study discovered a rise in violent incidents amongst the 1200 inmates during the days on either side of a full moon. Could there be any truth to these reports or are people just reaching to make myth into reality?

Even the word lunatic has its connection to the moon. People in ancient days believed there was a connection with the moon and violent behavior. What do I think? I have not noticed a pattern between my mood and the full moon. I am sure there have been times that I was feeling a bit more agitated than usual during a full moon event but that could be a coincidence. Many scientists seem to believe the full moon phenomenon is a bunch of hype. I still love to howl when I see the full moon in all of her glory.

Enjoyed your article. I am not sure what I think but I do know that I certainly see more active wildlife in my yard during a full moon.

During the full moon phase, I feel all happy and full of energy. Like I'm one with the universe. I guess the full moon affects everyone differently though. I find it really nice to walk along the beach and bask in the moonlight. It's beautiful.

very interesting indeed!I don't care what the doubters say, there is definitely something to this-personal experience with this-my daughter was due and speaking with my grandmom, she said, oh she'll be born on thursday. Why? she said thats when the moon was full and guess who was born that thursday? The maternity ward was full, every bed and the nurses told me the same thing.

So, is it a scientific claim and not a superstition?

All evidence of this phenomena has been refuted by empirical evidence, sorry to burst your bubbles. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lunar_effect

I just found this article, because for the past couple months, I've noticed on certain days that I feel weird - like much more alert and aware and I can think really clearly. The last 3 times it happened, I didn't have any idea what phase the moon was in, but it turned out to be 1 or 2 days *before* a full moon in each case. The day of the full moon, and a day after, I feel the opposite - sluggish, tired, and my mind feels cloudy. I wouldn't believe it if it didn't happen so much, and I didn't feel so different. And since I didn't have any idea it was close to a full moon, I don't think it's just a psychological self-fulfilling idea. But it is really weirding me out!
