Lux Minute Minder 60 Minute Classic Timer

Consumer Product Review

Thomas J McCabe
Last week, my wonderful Aunt surprised me with the gift of an old - fashioned one hour kitchen timer. In a conversation with her a few weeks earlier, I mentioned how I was looking for an old-fashioned, wind-up kitchen timer, but kept forgetting to look while shopping at various retail stores.

Not only am I grateful for my Aunt's generosity, but I also think this item would be a good item to review. Presented here, in an effort to assist the consumer, is an article which reviews and examines the Lux Minute Minder 60 Minute Classic Timer.

Size
The Lux Minute Minder 60 Minute Classic Timer measures roughly 3.25" x 2.75. The arrow shaped turning mechanism in the center of the timer is approximately 1.75" long and is easy to turn.

Appearance
This top rate timer features a clean and classic design that is, no pun intended, timeless. There are two colors on this timer ; black and white.

The main body of the timer is white in hue and the minute numerals, plus the words 'Lux and Minute Minder' are the only markings on the product.

Call me crazy, but I love the appearance of the Lux Minute Minder 60 Minute Classic Timer. I like glancing across my kitchen counter area and seeing the timer sitting there. Its simple design looks like art-deco to me.

The turning mechanism in the center of the timer looks a lot like a rocket ship from a 1950s comic book. The bold face and up-swept top also contribute to the art-deco effect.

Price
The price sticker for the Lux Minute Minder 60 Minute Classic Timer that my Aunt purchased for me is still affixed to the backing label. The retail price that she paid for one of these timers at an upscale hardware store in West Hartford, Connecticut was $8.49.

Although it is somewhat of a basic, old-fashioned product, I think that the Lux Minute Minder 60 Minute Classic Timer is a specialized item. At first, I thought that the price seemed a little high, but after looking closely at the timer and utilizing it, I realized that its price is very reasonable.

Ringer
Printed on both the front and rear packaging labels of the Lux Minute Minder 60 Minute Classic Timer are the words 'Long Ring'. When the timer reaches the designated time for it to go off, the ringer sounds for approximately three or four seconds. While that might not sound like long for a ring, some of the timers that I have utilized in commercial kitchens only ring for approximately one second.

At a first-rate French restaurant where I worked as a line cook, all of us cooks would take turns baking baguette croutons, at the start of our shifts. We all used the kitchen timer, which only sounded for a second and we all regularly burnt the croutons. With a flurry of activity always occurring, the sound of the kitchen timer would regularly get drowned out.

The sound that the Lux Minute Minder 60 Minute Classic Timer gives off is reminiscent of a ringer-style older type of telephone. It is not at all obnoxious or irritating.

Effectiveness
The Lux Minute Minder 60 Minute Classic Timer does exactly what it is designed to do. I think the timer is a great invention and this brand of timer is very good. I was looking for a simple, functional and effective timer to use in the kitchen and this product very ably fills the bill.

The only possible reservation I may have regarding this timer concerns lining up the '0' mark with starting the timing process. On the timer I have, the turning mechanism has to be lined up by hand with the 0.

Overall Rating
If you're looking for a functional and effective, old-fashioned kitchen timer, the Lux Minute Minder 60 Minute Classic Timer is a very good brand to buy. Stocked and sold at hardware stores, department stores and on-line, this timer is a recommended product.
