Luxury Homes in Northern California

Bodega Bay luxury homes on the Pacific Coast, just over 67 miles north of San Francisco, was the beach setting for Alfred Hitchcock's "The Birds." In reality, the birds aren't troublesome, but the views of sandy crags and rocky peninsulas are just as impressive. Waterfront golfers and Kortum Trail hikers love the views so much they often opt to roost in Bodega Bay indefinitely. Despite the beautiful setting on a sunny day, many days are covered in fog, which is why the turnover rate is high for the region. Yet, for the bargain luxury homesshopper, this also means top-notch features for rock-bottom prices.

A three-bedroom Bodega Bay home overlooking the ocean might sell for under $800,000, for instance. These attractive luxury homes are perfect for avid golfers, boaters and Pacific fishers. Highway 1 houses atop the ocean-facing bluffs look appealing at first, but there is still always the risk that they may "drop off into the sea," local luxury homes realtors warn, so prospective homebuyers should seek out safer land to build their new life upon.

Across town, also in Sonoma Valley, is Guerneville - a location of luxury homes that combines the Russian River, redwood gullies and untouched wilderness with affordable luxury homes. At least 40 percent of the houses here were set up as getaway cabins and second homes, local luxury homesexperts say, and the area is quickly gentrifying with many gay residents relocating away from the hustle and bustle of San Francisco. The value of these homes is high because neighboring Sonoma nooks and Napa Valley enclaves are ensuring the appreciation. Two-bedroom homes with river and mountain views on the market for $469,000 offer a comfortable respite for people who prefer privacy to sun.

Each year, 60 luxury homes get snapped up in Calistoga. Here, residents buy houses worth more than $2 million or opt into a fractional ownership opportunity at $425,000, which entitles them to three weeks a year in the home. This area is perfect for hiking, biking, picnicking, spa treatments and wine tasting. People here soak up "the good life," local luxury homesrealtors say. Calistoga is much like other Napa Valley towns such as St. Helena or Yountville, but offers 20% more for the money, in terms of square footage. Also, 40 percent of the Calistoga luxury homes sell with over an acre of land. The homes themselves range from fixer-uppers and bungalows to nine-bedroom homes on 153 acres with wine cellars and wine country views.
