When visitors first come to Kansas City, I find they are usually surprised by how modern the city is, and by how friendly the people are. Kansas City has so much to offer a new resident or tourist, including luxury shopping, right here in the Midwest.

Luxury shopping in Kansas City has found its home in Country Club Plaza, a premier tourist destination and hot spot for the locals. Located south of downtown Kansas City, "The Plaza" as it is known locally, is a stunning display of fountains, lights and amazing architecture that rolls on for several city blocks. Tucked away in all this architecture are shops, restaurants and entertainment venues. Luxury shoppers are catered to at Country Club Plaza, with some of the most recognizable storefronts in the world.

The flagship store at the Country Club Plaza is Halls, an exclusive department store owned by the Hallmark Company. Opened in 1965, Halls has taken luxury to a new level, from the Baccarat chandeliers to the exclusive Jewel Room. Shopping at Halls is an experience, with sales staff catering to your every desire. Corporate gifts and personal shoppers are just a few of the services Halls provides.

Betsy Johnson, Burberry, Anthropologie and Tiffany and Co. all have storefronts in the Country Club Plaza. Popular restaurants include Kona Grille and Figlio Italian Restaurant. For lunch while shopping, try the Classic Cup Sidewalk Café. The food is very good; they have a selection of nice wines, and a front row seat to people watch.

Luxury shopping is not only found in the Country Club Plaza. Located a little farther south of the Plaza is the Brookside neighborhood. Brookside is a great community filled with large stately homes and a shopping district that can't be beat. Brookside is a toned down version of the Plaza, with smaller designer boutique shops ands specialty stores. Shop Girls is one of the more popular boutiques, with specialty clothing found no where else in Kansas City. Von Maur department store, located in Overland Park, is a short drive from the Kansas City area. Von Maur offers its own unique shopping experience, with open shopping spaces and first on the market fashions. Also in Overland Park is Hawthorne Plaza, a luxury shopping center located on the busy 119^th st corridor. Here, along with many other luxury stores, you can find Girl Boutique, which carries unique lines like Seven For All Mankind and one of a kind designer clothing.

For luxury shopping in the downtown area try Crown Center, a three story shopping center with an outdoor ice skating rink. This shopping area is not necessarily a luxury venue, but it is anchored by another Halls department store, and many other specialty shops and jewelry stores. Stop in at Vinones, a unique modern clothing store for women.
