Mabry Mill

Beauty on the Blue Ridge Parkway

Lori Slate
A favorite spot to visit during any season is Mabry Mill. The mill is an old grist mill powered by water that still works. Located at mile marker 176.2 on the scenic Blue Ridge Parkway, the mill is a favorite spot for amateur and professional photographers. When the rhododendrons are in bloom, the autumn foliage adorns the trees, ice is frozen in the wheel, or any weekend that local blue grass musicians are present; you're sure to see a crowd enjoying the beauty.

Mabry Mill is located in Floyd, Virginia and attracts thousands of tourists and regulars each season. Renowned for the photo opportunities and the country dining, you can often find tour buses alongside motorcycles in the parking lot. A local favorite is the country ham biscuits or buckwheat pancakes with maple syrup that are available. Adjacent to the restaurant is a gift shop with crafts, music, and fine gifts (many handmade by local crafters).

While visiting, you can also stroll along the pathways through the trees, across a foot bridge and through the blacksmith's building. A small restored cabin also houses a loom where demonstrations can be seen most weekends throughout the summer and fall. Tucked back in the woods is also a whiskey still, a wood shed and in a central location is a wooden dance floor where blue grass bands perform most weekends. Young and old alike are drawn to the dance floor to tap their feet in time to the music. Crowds gather and bring their quilts and lawn chairs to enjoy the entertainment.

Of course, you have to walk through the mill itself. The subject of many photo shoots, it is fascinating to walk inside and see the mill in action. Giant wooden wheels and gears grind out a loud creaking noise. Volunteers from the National Park Service frequently man the mill and other areas to explain the history and operation. Visitors can purchase ground wheat or corn meal inside the mill or gift shop. You can also look out the window of the mill and see ducks leisurely swimming in the pond area.

There are no traffic lights, no sounds but those of nature and old timey music, and visitors come to enjoy the peace and fellowship which is readily available. For a great day of family fun, fresh air and history, visit Mabry Mill often. Once you go the first time, you will want to visit each season to see the mill and the mountains in all of their beauty.
