The MacGregor M685 Forged irons at first glance look like a standard satin finished cavity back forging. Thats pretty much where the generalization stops, there is a whole lot of technology going into these simple looking clubs!
The 3-6 irons are forged with tungsten inserted in the sole area for added trajectory and forgiveness. The faces in the irons are also forged separately and welded onto the body of the club for added distance and forgiveness. and the 7-PW are created from forged 1025 Carbon Steel. The 1025 steel is a softer steel which gives you more feel, spin and distance control on your shorter shots. The wedges are designed the same way as the short irons.
When I first swung these clubs I was highly impressed with the feel and look. Being a traditionalist, I was not sure how I would like the look of a thicker top line a cavity back creates. They feel like a traditional forged blade, but the trajectory and distance was incredible! I was able to gain a few more yards with each club while still being able to shape the ball any way I liked! When I got a chance to take them to the course the accuracy was amazing. The ball jumped off the faces of these clubs, and even with the cavity, I was able to work the ball with them. I did not have to guess if the ball was going to jump forward, or rip back 10 feet. It landed and stayed within a few feet of that area each and every time!
I would suggest these to any mid to low handicap player looking for a great set at a great price. Since MacGregor has discontinued these, they are selling as low as $279.00 on the Internet and for about $40 more from a local Pro or Club Maker, can be adjusted to fit you perfectly! The M685 irons are by far A+ irons that perfectly blend tradition and technology in a clean, classic looking head!
Check out my review of its blade brother, the M675!
