When Rodriguez and Tarantino made Grindhouse in 2007, they included a string of fake trailers during the "intermission." One of them was called Machete, as cult character actor Danny Trejo played an ex-federale out for vengeance after being set up. Now, the trailer has spawned a full-length movie, with even more envelope-pushing action.
Because of that -- or in spite of it -- Machete review scores have been getting higher on Rotten Tomatoes. The movie is now up to 75 percent positive, with an average 6.4 rating, The consensus warns that: "Machete is messy, violent, shallow and tasteless - and that's precisely the point of one of the summer's most cartoonishly enjoyable films"
Many of the Machete review comments state that this is what The Expendables should have been. Although Sylvester Stallone's efforts to make an action throwback with a cast of icons were met with shrugs, Rodriguez's efforts have gone down better. In fact, this movie has an even crazier cast, putting Steven Seagal, Robert De Niro, Jessica Alba, Don Johnson, Michelle Rodriguez, and a mostly naked Lindsay Lohan in the same film.
The stunt casting, the violent action, and the promotion of Trejo as an action hero have made Machete review scores favorable. Yet critics are surprised at how Rodriguez uses the illegal immigration issue as a major part of the story. In fact, they warn that right-wing and anti-illegal activists might have many reasons to protest this film, other than the sex and violence.
Although all of the Machete reviews know that the movie can't be taken seriously, the violent, pro-illegal sentiments might actually garner serious controversy. Countless action films have been classified as right-wing for its vigilante heroes, but this might be one of those rare shoot-em-up films for the left wing audiences.
Still, many Machete review articles cite the political material as the weak leak -- along with any other parts that don't involve death or dismemberment. But due to the good, gory stuff, Rodriguez has succeeded with critics where other action throwbacks have failed.
