Machine or Man

Susan Owens
I watch you age
Every single day

I watch you grow old
In every single way

I watch as the life escapes your body
As your mind slowly fades away

I can not help but wonder
Are you still under all that mess?

Can you hear me through those ears?
Your hairs are quite Gray
Say my dear,
Can you still see me?

I know that you are living
I can see that you are still breathing

I watch your rib cage as it rises and falls
Again and again
Watching how each breath escapes your lips

A machine attached to your body
More wires and tubes run to and from you
Then ever I did see attached to any other machine

So which of the two are you
I wonder
Machine or man?

I hear the heaviness of your breath
The panting of a sick dog

I hear the low roar of those evil people
I hear what they say
I know that they are right
I should let you pass away
I feel that they are wrong
How could they be so cruel?

Did they not know you?
These aliens have invaded my home
They walk the hospital halls
For the sake of who?
Not for me
And not for him
What friends they have been
All their lies do not convince me
I see everything clearly
My dear,
I know that you are still in there

I can not bring myself
To end a life to soon
My selfish ways wont let me
They have become me

I can not let you go
I will not let you go
Not the man that I had known

I have grown quite fond of you
I am not ready to loose you
Not the man I knew

So which of the two are you
I wonder
Machine or man?
