Mackenzie Phillips Tell-All Details Alleged Incest with Dad John Phillips

Carol Bengle Gilbert
In a sordid tell-all book, actress Mackenzie Phillips alleges that her now deceased father engaged in sexual relations with her when she was in her late teens and introduced her to drugs. Phillips' father, John Phillips was a member of the Mamas and the Papas, a popular band in the 1960s and 70s. Mackenzie Phillips is best known for her teen starring role in the television sitcom One Day at a Time, which aired for 9 years beginning in 1975. In her adult years, Mackenzie Phillips has struggled with drug addiction and has enjoyed some success in mostly minor acting roles.

Mackenzie Phillips disclosed the secret she says she has been keeping for 31 years on the Oprah Winfrey show to promote her just released book High on Arrival. As if anyone needed another celebrity tell-all book, airing dirty family laundry. Someone needs to tell Mackenzie Phillips that celebrity incest isn't new- actress Rita Hayworth (1918-1947) covered that territory several decades ago.

And as far as the whole child film star lived secret miserable life routine, that's been done before too. Think Shirley Temple, Brady Bunch...

Celebrity tell-alls are as common in number as they are common in the sense of "coarse, lacking in refinement or taste." Who's besides Mackenzie Phillips is purporting to tell all in the hopes of selling books?

Last year, Britney Spears' mother capitalized on her daughter's fame by writing the celebrity tell all Through the Storm.

Model Kate Moss is currently penning a tell all which promises lurid details of drug abuse and sexual infidelity.

It's not just the celebrities and their family members who pen tell-all stories of the worst celebrity personal moments. Mickey Brett, former bodyguard to Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie as well as Sandra Bullock and Tom Cruise, was reported in June to be considering writing up his memoirs of life with Brangelina. Pitt and Jolie's attorney has said that a Brett memoir of his time with the couple would breach a confidentiality agreement he signed, according to UPI.

Mackenzie Phillips' celebrity cash-in is sad, sick, and sordid but it certainly isn't singular.

I am not sure if I feel so sorry for Mack or if I envy her for living an incest relationship with daddy.
Starting from the point of view that she enjoyed sexual intercourses with dad ( as she confessed ),I want to believe that she was born to have that life style. A ten years incest affair confirms the consensual aspect of this stuff. They lived their incest at full, and enjoyed sexually more than any " normal couple ". Don´t forget that at that time they both shared their sexual life with respective couples.

I've heard about this story a lot lately. What a controversy!

While all the other child stars you mentioned may have had unpleasant childhoods, along with many other child stars (Patty Duke,e.g.), I do think MacKenzie's story is particularly sad, being that her parents were famous, and she was basically abandoned at age 12 by both of them, and used and abused by both of them AND their friends. Mick Jagger is quoted as telling her at age 18 or 19, when he took her to bed after her father left them alone, that he'd been waiting for this chance since she was 10! How that girl is still alive is a mystery to me.

Hhhhmmmm%2C Mack was the same age when she says she was abused by John as Michelle Phillips when she wed John...18. And%2C they %28John %26 Michelle%29 had an affair for some time prior to the marriage - so John was having sexual relations with a minor. They %28John %26 Michelle%29 were also good friends with Roman Polanski. This%2C coupled with Genevieve%27s constant complaints about how familiar Mack was with her father%2C which he easily dismissed%2C sends red flags furling - don%27t dismiss the allegations too quickly.

I believe her story, I believe she is a victim and I believe she had a right to write about it. I'm amazed at how many people are angry at Mackenzie, but are giving her daddy a pass.

Celebrity tell-alls are not nearly as common as mean, lame, ignorant columnists, who encourage the victim-bashers, who love to add insult to injury, and who are just writing to make a buck, Carol.

I understand her needing to work her way through this abuse she suffered. I just don't understand why she felt the need to air her dirty laundry to the whole world. When we normal people who aren't celebrities need to work through our childhoods, we seek counseling with someone and we work through it privately. Because of the way she is making the rounds with the talk shows, I am thinking she is trying to capitalize on this story and she has a new book, show, ect...coming out soon and wants more publicity for it.

I find it sad that anyone ever has to got through the things that sick individuals put them through. I also think it's sick to capitalize on it. If they want to make a difference by telling the truth, then they should be doing so in a positive way like helping others who have been in similar situations or helping to spread awareness for the help of others.

I've heard of the Mamas and Papas, but I don't know a lot about them. Without your initial explanation, I would not have known who Mackenzie Phillips was. It's very disturbing to hear of these allegations of incest. I don't know why some celebrities like to disclose such personal information about themselves. Perhaps they feel that it will help them to overcome the abuse or the dependency on drugs?

Really disturbing allegations for sure... And then there is Valerie Bertinell's own confessions... Boy if they ever do a 'One Day At A Time' reunion, they're gonna have a lot to talk about when getting back together!
