Maclaren Umbrella Strollers Recalled

Jacqueline Giovanniello
Maclaren recalled 1 million single and double umbrella strollers that can amputate or cut fingertips. The company stated there have been 12 amputations so far.

Consumers can contact Maclaren at 877 688-2326 or visit www.maclaren.us/recall to receive a repair kit.

The recall affects the following models:
Volo, Triumph, Quest Sport, Quest Mod, Techno XR, Techno XLR, Twin Triumph, Twin Techno and Easy Traveler.

Maclaren states that the amputations have occurred when the consumer is unfolding/opening the stroller. The kit that Maclaren if offering free of charge is a hinge cover which will cover the strollers hinge mechanism. This is being offered to all consumers of affected strollers.

According to Maclaren this is a voluntary recall on their part as their strollers meet all U.S ASTM and JPMA compliance standards.

Maclaren urges all consumers to read the instruction manual prior to use which contains valuable safety tips. They also are urging all consumers who have affected strollers to contact them immediately to obtain the kit.

The affected strollers were sold at Babies R Us and Target and other juvenile retailers nationwide from 1999 through Nov 2009.

I had to share this product recall information that I came across as it was very scary to hear about. I have two children and I could see this happening. Please contact Maclaren if you own one of these strollers. The thought of this happening to 12 children already is upsetting, I can't imagine what the parents went through. Maclaren has also posted videos on You Tube, one which demonstrates how to use the new hinge covers.

I believe it will take Maclaren some time to recover after this, as children have already been hurt and that is inexcusable. I applaud Maclaren for their decision to recall, but I wish they would of done it sooner. In my opinion 12 incidents is way too many. Something should have been done after the second occurrence. I hope manufacturers of baby and children's products will look at this as an eye opener. it's not OK to wait, when children are involved.
