Mad Men Creator Matthew Weiner, AMC Reach Contract Deal

We Thought the Feud Would Never End

The Huffington Post reports this important news about the AMC drama, "Mad Men":

"Mad Men" creator Matthew Weiner and AMC announced Thursday that they had come to a contract agreement that would keep him with the show for three more years. The deal is reportedly worth $25-30 million, and comes after heated negotiations that became public and almost broke down earlier in the week.

"I want to thank all of our wonderful fans for their support," Weiner said in a statement. "I also want to thank AMC and Lionsgate for agreeing to support the artistic freedom of myself, the cast and the crew, so that we can continue to make the show exactly as we have from the beginning. I'm excited to get started on the next chapter of our story."

Los Angeles, New York City, and the rest of the flyover states in between should be delighted that "Mad Men" is going on for another chapter in the intriguing, dramatic series. There is little else on TV that is more precious than a show about advertising men slinging vital corporate propaganda in a perfectly consumable package for the proletariat. And it takes place in the 1960s! If that isn't the most novel setting for a TV show that you've ever experienced, then please write celebritygobbler@hotmail.com and tell us what is more novel than a TV show about ad men in the 1960s.

Back to the propaganda. The groundlings eat up all propaganda. Getting the citizens of America to buy something or believe in something or someone is the easiest task on earth. It was easy in the 60s, and it's easy in the 2010s. And selling lies to the non-celebrity American public, like the Mad Men do, will be just as easy in the 2200s.

Celebrities do not fall for such propaganda. Celebrities are already one thousand steps ahead of the average American consumer. This is a digression, but is still relevant to "Mad Men", because ultimately it's about tricking average Americans into believing something -- that smoking is cool, that cigarette brand X is better than brands A-W, and on. And all non-celebrity Americans will fall for it again and again.

It's not like non-celebrities are endowed with much intelligence. In fact, they won't even make it to Heaven. Non-celebrities will be struck dead on Oct. 21, 2011 (if not earlier) by the Lord himself (read that here). Only celebrities will go to Heaven. But doesn't that make sense? Jesus was a celebrity. A mega celebrity. Marilyn Monroe was almost as important of a celebrity. The actors of "Mad Men" are celebrities, even if somewhat minor ones. They will still go to Heaven on May 21, 2011.

Back to AMC's deal with Matthew Weiner and some people's favorite show "Mad Men". What else can you tell us, Huffington Post:

AMC dropped its demand for a $1.5 million per season budget cut; the preserved money means in part that Weiner will no longer be required to cut two significant actors per season. Instead, characters will be cut if it suits the show creatively.

The network insisted that the show cut two minutes per episode for more advertising time; the contract calls for the first and last episode of the show to be the normal 47 minutes. For episodes 2-11, they will initially air as 45 minute episodes, and Weiner's "Final Cut" will be available digitally 8 days later. The source emphasized that Weiner has full creative control of the show. It will begin again in March, 2012; AMC has a full slate of summer and fall shows and had always intended to start "Mad Men" later than it had hit airwaves in seasons past.
