Mad Men - Season 4 Finale

Did Don Draper Drive Off of a Cliff?

John Kelly
What in the world was Don Draper thinking? Does he really believe he is getting an upgrade with Meagan as his new wife versus ex-wife Betty? It really doesn't matter because that is where the writers took us to end the fourth season of Mad Men.

Don Draper proposed to his secretary, Meagan, after knowing her for a very short time. I would have said whirlwind romance but really, that isn't the case is it? There hasn't been a lot of romance in this latest hook-up of playboy Don Draper. What we have seen is a romp in the office one evening with "no strings attached" which I think in itself was intriguing to Don. What seems to have caught Don's attention is Meagan's ability with his children. She is really calm and even handed, especially during stressful situations. This is the exact opposite of ex-wife Betty Draper's child rearing antics. She demonstrated these again so adroitly for us in this final episode of Season 4 by firing long time nanny Carla for letting Glen go up to say goodbye to Sally. Even Betty's current husband, Henry Francis, seems exasperated with her antics.

So, where will be next season with Mad Men? Will Don truly follow his engagement to Meagan through to marriage? Will he try to see more of the children if he "settles down" with Meagan? Isn't the thought of that just anti-Don Draper? Don, settling down? I mean even if he is married surely we can still expect Don to be the rambling playboy of Madison Avenue. Perhaps the death of his friend Anna will cause Don to settle down and focus on growing his advertising business. Maybe, just maybe, this will keep Don moving forward.
