Copies went out to some bloggers and writers in early July, just a few weeks before the episode aired. As such, they have had to keep quiet for awhile, and know full well not to reveal many spoilers. But, some sources, like the New York Times and Entertainment Weekly, still have a couple of minor teases.
Even these details for the Mad Men Season 4 premiere might be too tempting for fans. They are on-edge for the new year, but still want to keep themselves completely unspoiled. In particular, they are trying to avoid learning how far ahead the show jumps in time, and how far along the new Sterling Cooper is.
This kind of spoiler-phobia for the Mad Men Season 4 premiere is both obvious and odd. This is not a mystery show, a la Lost, and season premieres usually don't indicate how the rest of the year will go. The only mystery to this premiere is when it starts and where everyone is, which is technically just set-up material.
Still, this is a show in which surprises come out of nowhere. The Mad Men Season 4 premiere probably won't have twists like Peggy's pregnancy, a foot getting run over by a lawnmower, or the forming of the new agency. Those kind of twists are saved for the end of a year - but they have proved that the show lives for the unexpected.
Therefore, since Matthew Weiner can pull the rug out at any time, every episode has an "anything can happen" vibe. But the Mad Men Season 4 premiere has to set up the foundation of a new rug, before Weiner pulls it out later in the year.
As such, even the foundation is shrouded in secrecy and surprise - which makes fans all too tempted to get the slightest clue. Those who can resist have only five more days to hold out, before Season 4 starts on Sunday night.
