'Mad Men's' Christina Hendricks: 'She Got Curves' (And We Love Her for It!)

I first laid eyes on Christina Hendricks just a few short months ago, when she did the cover of New YorkMagazine.

The "Girls" Can't Help It

Having never watched the popular, Emmy winning, night time drama, Mad Men, in which she stars, I had not heard of her or seen her. But, when I did, "wow" was the best word I could muster. Then, the next thing I wanted to know was, "Are those things real????"

It's a sad commentary when one of the first things that crosses your mind when you see an ample bosom is whether or not they are real or artificially inflated.

But, in our anorexic chic culture, where women look like walking sticks with helmets inserted into their chests, well, when you see the real deal, it's rather shocking and hard to believe. (Rumor has it even mega-chest, Dolly Parton, has propped hers up with the help of a surgeon.)

The jury is still out, however, as to whether Christina Hendricks' chest is real or store bought. But, one thing is for sure, she's voluptuous, she's curvy and she's a womanly, Marilyn Monroe-esque size 14, who loves salt and creamy foods. Somebody kiss that girl.

Since Christina Hendricks debuted her "girls" in New York magazine, her husband has remarked that she is a bit uncomfortable with all of the attention she is receiving. Understandable, but, I hope someone tells Christina Hendricks that she is beloved by many for not bowing down to the pressures of Hollywood and the fashion industry to lose her womanly shape and chest.

Silicone Valley Girls

With all of the Hollywood saline, plastic and silicone that is shoved in our faces these days, can you blame us for admiring real bosoms, or in some cases, even the lack thereof? Recall the recent brouhaha when the very lovely and adorable, Kate Hudson, famous for her woefully un-endowed chest was rumored to have gotten breast implants.

The world cried out in a collective, "No!", because we loved her just the way she was, flat chest and all. Though, let the record show that Kate Hudson has neither confirmed nor denied whether she had the surgery.

The Girls Next Door

There was a time, in our modern culture, when a size 14 to size 16 was considered "average". Marilyn Monroe, Jane Mansfield and Jane Russell were the standard of beauty then, and they were all at least a size 12, but, more likely a 14 or a 16.

Though the model, Twiggy, threatened to usher in stick thin models in the 1960's, it was well into the 1990's before we began to see the emaciated, heroin chic that dominates the fashion world and the catwalk today.

Prior to that, in the 1980s, we still had the lovely and curvaceous Christie Brinkley and Cindy Crawford idealizing beauty, both of whom had (and still have) ample curves and normal body weight.

Bring Sexy Back

America, and the world, for that matter, has grown weary of a standard of beauty that requires flirting with death to maintain it, evidenced by the popularity of women like Christina Hendricks. And tell me, who can't love a woman who claims salt and cream for a beauty secret?

I think I can speak for many when I say, I sincerely hope Christina Hendricks will not bow down to the fashion world gods of anorexia and bulimia and keep the bombshell curves that have made her famous. She's bold, she's bodacious, her cup runneth over and well, we love it.
