Sarah Breedlove, who later became known as Madame C. J. Walker was born into a former slave family to parents Owen and Minerva Breedlove.
Madame Walker was a black entrepreneur who built her empire developing hair products for black women.
Madame Walker died at Villa Lewaro at the home that she built at the age of 51 on May 25, 1919. Upon her death she was considered to be the wealthiest African-American woman in America and known to be the first African American woman millionaire.
