Made in Heaven, Movie Review

An '80s, Classic Love Story and More

Vicky Jeter
Chronicling two lifetimes, from about 1940 - 1980, Made in Heaven, is an Alan Rudolph/David Blocker film, released in 1987, that invites viewers on a delightful trek to consider what life might really be like before we are ever a gleam in our parents' eyes. Where do we come from, and just how do we get here? And, how much does the system," as the Man in Charge, Emmett Humberg calls the relationship between Heaven and Earth, have to do with what happens in our lives, and when we die? Timothy Hutton and Kelly McGillis each play dual leading roles along with a surprising supporting cast including Neil Young, Tom Petty, and Emmett Humberg, as himself.

From the opening sudden death of the hero, Mike Shae, Made in Heaven weaves a rollercoaster rhythm from life through death to life, and back again. Hutton and McGillis are star-crossed lovers, each filled with exquisite longing that stirs them, in their own unique ways, to search for something, without being certain exactly what, or who, they are looking for. Along the way through their entwined stories it is easy to identify with them in experiences and feelings we have had, and what we have believed or imagined about life, death and Heaven. Yet, as is so often true, at every turn there is the unexpected, inspiring wonder about where divine intervention meets personal volition, and when fantasy becomes reality.

If you have ever experienced or just wondered about De ja vu, if you have questions about life's purpose and meaning, or if you just like a really great love story, see, Made in Heaven. It will bring you a smile, and as Rudolph and Blocker say, "You may even know some of the people."
