Madea's Family Reunion: Gun-toting Mable Simmons Returns to the Big Screen

The Return of Tyler Perry's Alter Ego

Cassondra Marshall
Following the huge success of last year's film adaptation of Tyler Perry's play "Diary of a Mad Black Woman", Lion's Gate Films and Tyler Perry have teamed up again to bring us yet another film starring Perry as the hilarious, gun-toting Mabel Simmons, better know as Madea.

Perry returns to the roles of Madea, Madea's crass brother Uncle Joe, and her nephew Brian. Also returning is veteran actress Cicely Tyson in the role of Myrtle, an elderly relative. Joining Perry and Tyson, are Boris Kodjoe, Lynn Whitfield, Maya Angelou, and Henry Simmons among others.

As usual, Madea is looked to for guidance in solving the problems that plague various members of her family. This time, all while planning her family reunion. Audiences are looking for more of Madea's crazy antics and unorthodox advice, but may get to see a softer side of the riotous matriarch as she tries to forge a bond with foster child Nikki, portrayed by rising young actress Keke Palmer.

The stage version of "Madea's Family Reunion" is just one of several plays featuring the funny wisdom of Madea. Others include the popular stage version of "Diary of a Mad Black Woman", "I Can Do Bad All By Myself", "Madea's Class Reunion", and "Madea Goes To Jail". Other stage works by Perry include "Meet The Browns", " I Know I've Been Changed", and "Why Did I Get Married? He Proposed". Through the use of comedy, Perry imparts a spiritual wisdom in each of his works.

Audiences find that there are common themes of love, family, and forgiveness throughout Perry's catalogue of comedic dramas.

Because Perry seems to have the Midas touch these days, it is hard to believe, that someone as talented as Perry once risked his savings on his dream of writing and ended up homeless. However, Perry continued to pursue his dream and, eventually, overcame the odds. Today, Perry is recognized by fans and media everywhere and is credited with having contributed to the replacement of the insulting title "Chitlin' Circuit" with "Urban Theater" as a reference to Contemporary Black Theater.

Madea's Family Reunion will open in theaters everywhere on February 24th. For more information or to see the movie trailer, visit the official movie website at http://www.madeasfamilyreunionmovie.com.

And I would tell any woman, if you've got an itch, I've got a recipe for sweet potato piedo you understand? It'll kill him in three days. They wouldn't know what happened to him."
