Madschun - Scene 1

A Play About a Pauper Loves a Princess

Christopher Williams
Fairy: Well hello there. How are you? I hope you are well, for I am ... well ... swell! I'm here today - to tell you a tale... about a mother and her son. So pay close attention please until the story's done. For you see, a long, long time ago there lived a woman and her son...

Mother: I'm so unhappy. My son only has three strands of hair left on the top of his head. Every mother wants her son to have a full head of hair to attract the right kind of wife to bear my beautiful grandchildren. I suppose though, there will be no grandchildren for me... But that certainly isn't the worst of it. My son is so lazy and he doesn't listen to anything that his mother - me - has to say. It's almost unbearable. (Mother starts to cry and is almost immediately joined by her son.)

Son: Mother... why are you crying?

Mother: Oh, no reason.

Son: Mother, aren't you happy to live in a meager cottage surrounded by a beautiful landscape of rolling hills that sometimes get topped with snow and flower-filled valleys with streams that flow to and fro?

Mother: Yes son, I am.

Son: Aren't you thankful for everything that we have?

Mother: Why yes. I have many things to be thankful and one thing that I am almost not.

Son: Speaking of that beautiful landscape of rolling hills that sometimes get topped with snow and flower-filled valleys with streams that flow to and fro, I think I'm going to go outside and take a nap.

Mother: (Aside) Ooh! That lazy son of mine. (To son) Do as you wish, son. (Aside) - you always have every other time. (Aside) He's so lazy. (Toward the appropriate direction) I wish he would lose his laziness, meet a princess, fall in love with her, move out and do whatever it takes to win her hand in marriage and live happily ever after.

Fairy: Very well... Done!

Mother: Who said that?

Fairy: I did.

Mother: And who are you? The Olive Fairy?

Fairy: Actually, yes!

Mother: I've heard of the Blue Fairy, The Red Fairy, The Crimson Fairy, The Lilac Fairy and almost every other color in and outside of the rainbow, but never have I heard of such... The Olive Fairy.

Fairy: (Nodding head)

Mother: The Olive Fairy? (Laugh)

Fairy: (Nodding head and begin to laugh with mother) Why are we laughing?

Mother: I don't know. Because you're ... "The Olive Fairy."

Fairy: Then, its not funny any more.

Mother: Very well then.

Fairy: Now let's get down to business.

Mother: Business?

Fairy: Business... You made a wish. I granted it. Have fun. (Turns away, getting ready to leave.)

Mother: Wait.

Fairy: (Turns to mother) Yes?

Mother: What are you talking about?

Fairy: You made a wish about your son. Wishes are not returnable. Sorry. Have a good life. (Exits)

Mother: Oh boy... ! What did I get myself into now?

Fairy: More "Madshun" soon.

First off, I like to buy websites. I have a strange affliction for it - don't know why - I just do. So, I act and I've gotten paid for it. I've artistically directed shows for audiences with large groups....  View profile

Cute, I like it. Write the next one quick, because I can't stand cliffhangers.
