The first tween girl magazine in my series of articles is called Discovery Girls Magazine. This magazine was available for check out from our local library and so we actually had a chance to look through the magazine and read it.
Unfortunately all of the newer issues were already taken and so we decided on checking out the June 2007 edition of Discovery Girls magazine. The front cover of the magazine shows two tween girls smiling and is filled with eye popping headlines to grab the attention of tween girls. 20 Reasons to Love Being a Girl and Embarrassing Moments, Quizzes, & More are just two of the headlines that grace the front cover of the tween magazine.
Inside the front cover of Discovery Girls magazine and on the front of the first page is an ad for girl's clothing which reminded me of grown up fashion magazines. After flipping through the first introductory pages I found some content that seemed fun, helpful, and encouraging to tween girls who read the Discovery Girls magazine. There were questions and answer sections which helped answer difficult questions for tween girls, a few fun quizzes, and even an article on sports which featured a young lady who is dedicated to swimming and wanting to compete in the Olympics which would make a great role model for tween girls. And for girls who are into reading about celebrity girls they even had an interview with one of the stars from Hannah Montana included in the magazine.
Overall, I liked this magazine and would allow my tween daughter to read it. In fact I have asked my tween daughter to reveal to me her opinions on the Discovery Girls magazine, here is what she said:
"I like this magazine. The "Embarrassing Moments" section is fun to read and I liked the Behind the Scenes pages. I think some girls may get helped by the answers section. I would give this magazine probably 8 stars (out of 10)."
The price of a Discovery Girls magazine subscription will cost you $19.95 for a one year, six issue, subscription. Discovery Girls has a website complete with the option of subscribing to the magazine and can be found here.
