Magic the Gathering Ravnica

Ever Wondered How the Story of Ravnica Goes?

Thomas Kearo
Ravnica, like other Magic The Gathering blocks and expansions before it, takes place in the realm of Dominia. A lot of Magic The Gathering players confuse Dominia with Dominaria, but in reality they're two different planes. I have no idea why Wizards of the Coast decided to name two unrelated realms so similarly but they did. Magic The Gathering Ravnica takes place as a metropolis that is planet wide.

The types of creatures and races in Dominia are astounding and beautiful just as the plane-scape. Along with the creatures and races in Ravnica, there are different factions that have been vying for power for as long as anyone can remember. These are known as guilds and they can get quite nasty. The neat idea behind Magic The Gathering Ravnica is that each of the guilds boasts a different color combination for their power. This makes things interesting as you get to see all of the colors in action when you read the books, play the cards, etc.

Ten Millenia previous to Ravnica's time line, an ancient guildpact was signed, bringing a new wave of peace to the Plane, and for years the guilds all got along and built the metropolis into what it is, but as we found out - a sinister force begins to threaten the peace that the guildpact signified and if the guilds aren't careful, the entire world will be destroyed.

Now that we've mentioned the guilds in Magic The Gathering Ravnica, let's take a look at them specifically and see what powers they harness. The guilds are interesting because you can choose whatever guild tickles your fancy and follow the characters and lifestyles of the aspect of Ravnica. In doing this, Wizards Of The Coast has allowed you to really connect with the characters and guilds.

Legion of Boros (Boros Legion) (Red/White): This guild is of the most militarily focused in the world of Ravnica. If you're used to playing any Dungeon and Dragons based games, I'd refer to them as neutral good. They want peace, but they won't hesitate to use force to preserve it. Ravnica uses a broad police force to keep it's citizens in line, and the Boros Legion is the direct cause of this. One military officer, referred to as Agrus Kos is a mainstay in the Magic The Gathering Ravnica line and you can directly follow this characters actions as they progress.

The Selesnya Conclave (Green/White): Magic The Gathering Ravnica also houses The Selesnya Conclave. These monastic members seek to keep the peace, but are more concerned about their personal way of life than anybody else. They love the forests and bounties of growth when they come, and they care for barely anything but that. They're ruled by Gorgons, whom they worship. The Gorgons (Sisters Of Stone Death) are constantly doing battle with another member of the conclave who wishes to overthrow them - Savra. The Selesnya Conclave is an interesting guild because there are two main story lines to follow between the gorgons and Savra.

The Golgari Swarm (Green/Black): The Golgari Swarm is a guild in Ravnica that borderline worships death. Though they don't wish it on people, they believe it to be an essential part of being, and the world would be upturned without it. They believe in cycles and would do anything to preserve what they feel to be natural and are very against feuding with processes beyond their control. Being an "individual" within The Golgari Swarm is nearly impossible, as they feel they're much stronger as a "swarm" than one single entity. They're supervised by The Chorus of the Conclave (dryads), and their champion leader goes by Tolsimir Wolfblood. An interesting storyline to follow if your interests lie with passive goals.

House Dimir (Blue/Black): In Magic The Gathering Ravnica, most of the other guilds are fairly vocal about themselves and tend to get attention. House Dimir lies beneath the shadows and is a highly secretive, tightly knit family of rogues and spies. They send their messages and traffic in secret and to be seen is heresy. They're often heard of as blackmailing potential threats to their organization and aren't to be trifled with. They're so elusive, in fact, that the denizens of Ravnica question if they even exist. They're led by a vampire named Circu, but oddly, he's not in the book. Maybe he's just that secretive.
