Magic the Gathering: Selling Cards Online

It Can Be a Daunting Task to Start an Online Magic Business, Let's Make it Easier

Thomas Kearo
A lot of Magic The Gathering players have turned their hobby into an online business. I know what you're thinking though. You're wondering where to begin and how to even get the inventory to do such a thing. As an experienced distributor and seller of Magic The Gathering cards, I can teach you how to start your very own card business from the ground up. It's not as hard as you might think!

There are many different roads you can take to get your cards out into the public and to the loads of players that need them for tournaments and the garage alike, you've just got the creative. You're options are pretty broad, and I'll go over a few of them here.

Website: Building your own website can be a daunting task. Thankfully, for us non coders, there are templates widely available for your use in designing your own fully functional internet store. Is it going to take work? The answer is most definitely yes, it will take some work. What's nice about the online store though, is once you've got the inventory set us and ready to go, you won't need to constantly be updating it. Your list of items is already there, now you've just got to ship the cards! There are various free web hosting and website creation tools out there, and that's fine for every day normal blogs and such, but not for a store. I highly recommend investing a little money into your site. Find a designer and pay them upfront to build your site if you can't code, it'll save you a lot of money in the long run.

Auction Sites: This is where a lot of sellers get their start. Auctions sites are a great tool for newbies because there is no coding involved. As long as you know how to use the site, you can literally sell just as well as anybody else on there, if your prices are right. These sites provide sellers with an outlet, and often times, give buyers the best prices because of it's capitalist nature (that is, competition). Often times, the fee is minimal, and you'll make a lot more than you'll need to pay in fees, so it's worth it. Another thing to consider is that the buyer is already there on these sites. You're not going to have to spend countless hours getting customers to your own site. Check out Ebay.com or EverythingMTG.com as just a few examples on how these auction sites work.

Affiliate Marketing: Those of you not familiar with affiliate marketing have nothing to worry about. It's actually a pretty simple process and the companies now make it easier than ever to sell through them. Affiliate marketing works in a way that benefits both the seller and you. You sell their cards for them using your traffic from a website you own. Say you have a Magic The Gathering blog. Well on that blog, you can set up ads for Amazon.com for their Magic Cards. For every person that goes through your site to buy the cards, you get a small percentage (and I do mean small). You're probably not going to make a fortune from affiliate marketing, BUT, you just set the ad and forget it. There is hardly any work involded besides keeping traffic to your website (as you already do) and setting up that initilal ad.
