Magic the Gathering: The Top 5 of Eventide

Eventide's Been Released! It's Time to Judge All the Cards and See Which Ones Come Out on Top

Thomas Kearo
With Eventide's release, we're seeing some of the most powerful cards to date within the realm of Magic The Gathering. Though there are great enemy hybrids and all kinds of strategies that have come to light with Eventide's release, there are still only going to be a few that shine out above the rest, and are fit for tournament play. Here are the top 5 cards in Eventide.

Five: Flickerwisp

I've used Flickerwisp in a lot of decks. Namely because it's a turn to mist creature that can bang out a target permanent from the table that your opponent controls. It's pretty awesome when you've got 2 attackers, your opponent has 2 blocks, and you throw this in and take 1 out of the game entirely until the end of turn. Don't forget that all enchantments and buffs go away from that creature when it comes back into play.

Four: Stigma Lasher

Stigma Lasher kind of speaks for itself, but at the same time it's an underappreciated card. For just two red mana you get a 2/2 wither, but that's not all. If Stigma Lasher deals damage to an opponent, than opponent cannot gain life for the rest of the gain. This card alone shuts down lifegain decks. Also, if your opponent has a bitterblossom in play (or maybe even 2 bitterblossoms), they can say goodbye in a few turns as they CANNOT gain life.

Three: Quillspike

Quillspike is a great card, but you might ask yourself "Well what If I don't have any creatures with -1/-1 counters to buff Quillspike up?" Not a problem. If somebody slaps you with an incremental blight, you've got them. If somebody's using a wither deck, you've got em. Not only that, but if you're looking for a steady flow of them, check out using Devoted Druid for mana, then buffing up the Quillspike an infinite number of times. Just give Quillspike trample and you can be dealing with a 750/750 who's damage is gonna get through!

Two: Hallowed Burial

Halowed Burial deserves props for being the new Wrath of God of Magic The Gathering. With all those nasty persist creatures out there, you're gonna want (and need) something that will get rid of them once and for all. Behold the great test on this card: "put all creatures on the bottom of their owners libraries." Amazing. In case you're still using wrath of god, you'll need to swtich to this as it has the ability to get rid of persist creatures, not to mention the creatures can't be brought back from the graveyard. They were never in the graveyard!

One: Figure of Destiny

This is one of the most efficient cards I've ever seen, if not the most efficient. When you play a Figure of Destiny or two, prepare for your opponent to quake in their boots. I've never seen a 1 drop creature that can last throughout the game, getting stronger and stronger until it's a monster. Just the thought of being able to use your turn 1 as your best creature on turn 8 is mind boggling to me. It almost seems unfair that Wizards included this is Magic The Gathering without some sort of equivalent in other colors. However, that's the name of game, you might as well take advantage of it!

  • Quillspike and Devoted Druid together are an infinite combo.
  • Hallowed Burial should replace Wrath of God in your deck.
  • Figure of Destiny is an incredibly efficient turn one play that will remain powerful in end game.
