Magic the Gathering: The Top 5 of Lorwyn
I'll Weed Out All the Clunkers and Get Down to the Best Cards in the Lorwyn Set
Five: Ponder
Ponder is often dismissed as a weak card because people say it doesn't do anything except give you a glimpse into your next draw. Exactly. That's what we want when we're playing Magic! Think about it. If you could see what you were going to draw every turn before you drew it, you'd be unstoppable. This is what Ponder accomplishes for you. Not only can you draw a card from 3, but if you don't need any of them, you can reshuffle your library and draw again. Not only is this card draw, it's card reorganization. This is one killer card.
Four: Wren's Run Vanquisher
This baddie is a cheap dreadnaught, capable of crushing your opponents creatures with the same costs. You're talking about a 3/3 deathtouch for 2 mana. I don't care who you are, that's not too shabby at all. Combine this with Bramblewood Paragon, and you've got a 4/4 Trample, Deathtouch Elf. Not to mention throwing in Imperious Perfect (buffs all your elves +1/+1). This is a staple for any modern beat down elf deck.
Three: Thoughtseize
I know, I know, all of these cards I'm listing off are for early game. That's just how Lorwyn was designed. Thoughtseize is an incredibly powerful card. Not only do you make your opponent discard, but you'll get a look at their entire hand. If you can't remember it, it's also legal to write it down during tournaments. It's incredibly good in the early game, and if you're lucky enough to get one in the end game, you'll still be able to put it to use. This is especially true if you have some life gain in your deck, to offset the cost of this card. If you play black, Get. This. Card.
Two: Gaddock Teeg
This is a legendary creature, so you'll need to only run 2 of them max, unless for some reason they're getting blown out of the water on every turn. Gaddock does what no other creature can do. He says "If you're playing big green, or any type of deck where your spells take more than 4 mana, you can no longer play them. ha!". He then spits in your face and watches unmercifully as you draw flame javelins and Rhox's while you can't play them. Gaddock by himself, is capable of entirely shutting down an opponents deck. Incredible.
One: Profane Command
Ok, so you already know that all of the command cards are good (well, except austere command, wtf is that), but Profane Command takes the cake. You can do so much with this card, it's unbelievable. Best of all, due to it's X casting cost you can play it early game for a quick fix, or it will scale with you as the game progresses and gets even more powerful. As an example of what you can do with Profane Command, check this out. You Twincast a Profane command, tapping let's say 3 mana. You'll do 3 damage to your opponent, return a 3 mana cost creature to play from your graveyard, destroy one of their 3/3 creatures, and give 3 of your creatures fear. This has the power to destroy your opponents morale and deck.
Those are the top 5 cards of Lorwyn, view my other articles for the top five of the other sets. I hope you've enjoyed the article, but don't go using these strategies against me! Especially that Twincast one! ha
