Mai Hime/My Hime: High School Anime

Erin Ward
When we first start Mai hime it looks as if this anime is going to be one of those lovey dovey girl animes about sexual angst. But very quickly on in the first episode you realize this is much more than that. From the first time Natsuki appears with Duran on the boat, you become pulled into the intriguing fight scenes and the delicately laid plot line.

Mai is a young high school girl, who not only juggles school but taking care of your younger brother in their parents absence. Her brother Takumi is extremely sickly and always in and out of the hospital with heart problems. For the longest time she's been seeing a red star in the sky above near the moon. She soon learns that anyone that can see that star, has the privileged of being a Hime (Highly-advanced Materializing Equipment). The hime can make a contract with a child' in order to protect the one they love the most. A child is a monster of extreme power that acts at the Hime's every whim.

Over all the series is 26 episodes long and for more than the first half of it your going to be feeling like everything is gradually getting better. Only to be plunged into despair right along side the heroine. Mai's life just gets worse and worse, as does just about everyone around her. Set in the high school/ middle school combo grounds of Fuka academy. You really learn you can't judge anyone right off the bat, as the plot is full of twists and turns.

Much more than your average girls with powers fighting' animes. Mai hime added the element of ultimate sacrifice to it, in that if the Hime's child monsters loose their most beloved dies with them. After the first Child dies you become extremely edgy about the future of the poor girls and their friends. By the end of the anime you will be pretty sad and yet enthralled by the whole experience. This is defiantly an anime to watch.
