My mother always wanted a doctor
For a son so that she could boast
About the genius she had raised;
But having failed her in that regard
And so as not to be hoist by my own petard,
I mailed thirty-five dollars away
To an online site that was in no way phased
By my request to have my credentials raised
To include a Doctorate;
My mother was pleasantly amazed!
Not knowing exactly what 'online' means,
Any degree, to her, is just as it seems.
There is no need to create interference
When what one sees
Is the longed for appearance.
A Doctor of Divinity is what it is,
Granted for a small contribution.
I can only hope that my clerical friends
Will not find fit to seek retribution.
Still wanting to please mother
After over six decades of existence
Is either terribly sad or very noble,
A mark of loving strength
Or a sign of inadequate resistance.
Whether or not I walk the talk
Will have no bearing on whether or not
Mom calls me "Doc."

Post a CommentAll parents want to be able to boast about their kids, the problem is most of them dont want to boast about what their child likes to do, and instead try to make them into something they are not. I think your mail order Doctorate was an easy and clever solution! It made your mom happy, and you didnt have to put an undue amount of work into something that held no interest for you. Now did you get your Doctorate in Divinity before or after becoming a Clinical Psychotherapist?
nicely done! so very true!
Wanting to please your mother is always noble.
Mothers can be just the way you say! Enjoyed your article on guilt also. Interesting and helpful information.
Yes, we all want to please our mothers at any age! Congratulations!
Loved it Doctor .
To me, you are the doc...of all wisdom friend. Diploma Mills abound...but you earned yours the old fashioned way. Worked hard and did it accreditedly (spl). PS, loved your article "Some Guilt Is a Good Thing!" but not a good thing that you can't comment on it. Happy Thanksgiving friend.
A marvellously entertaining poem. Thanks!
