Maine Hiking Trails

The Appalachian Trails in Maine are much more rugged and remote than the mountain trails in other mountainous regions. The many hiking trails to be found in Maine include the rugged terrain of Saddleback Mountain and the twin peaks of The Bigelow Range, along with many others. The opportunities for hiking adventures in Maine are numerous. Many of these hikes are somewhat strenuous and ambitious for those who are beginners. The high elevation and unsteady paths can be hard for some people to navigate. The hiking trails of Able Bridge, which is on the Penobscot River, are relatively easy to moderate hikes. But the unsteady footing and high elevation has been known to cause problems for some people, especially the elderly or those with from the bridge are some of the breathing problems. However, the views most majestic in the area so it's definitely worth the hike. From the bridge, if you continue South along the A.T. you'll work your way over big bridges, through the swamps and after 3 miles you'll arrive at Hurd Brook, where there is fresh water available for those who need it. From Hurd Brook the trail continues to climb Rainbow Ledges, putting you at an elevation of about 770 feet. Once you reach the high point of the Ledges you'll enjoy the beautiful views of Katahdin. Rainbow Spring Campsite is a short, 2 mile hike on one of the many side trails. And If you are feeling especially energetic you could continue to hike for an additional 2 miles to the West end of Rainbow Lake for a look at the Katahdin from the dam. This is an easy to moderate 22.4 mile hike through one of the most beautiful mountains in Maine. The numerous lakes, ponds and streams of Maine are some of its most beautiful and peaceful places.

This hike from Cooper Pond to Nahmakanta Stream treats you to some of the most beautiful sights this area has to offer. This hike is some of the easiest walking in the whole 100 mile wilderness area. So it's perfect for beginners as well as those who are more advanced in their hiking skills and stamina. Two of the most beautiful campsites in the area are Antlers campsite and Nahmakanta Stream campsite. While you are hiking you just might get lucky enough to see one of the many bull moose which are known to live in the area and often bathe and play in the ponds. These mountain trails are also known for their abundant vegetation and some of the most beautiful scenery in the mountains of Maine. After a brief 3 mile hike along the shores of Cooper Pond you'll reach Antlers Campsite. Once you've set up camp continue your hike for about 5 miles to a point of land that overlooks Lower Jo-Mary Jo Lake. This is an excellent spot to take a swim and cool off or enjoy a picnic on the rocks overlooking the lake. This is an easy 15 mile hike through the mountains of Maine. The Barren Chairback Range is a rough and rocky mountain range that has plenty of scenery to offer the more advanced hiker. On this hike you'll be scaling the five peaks of the Barren Chairback Range. Side trails from the Range lead to several mountain tops; cloud, West Chairback and East chair back. The elevation on this hike changes dramatically between peaks. It gains almost 4000 feet no matter which direction you choose to hike. This hike is for the more experienced hiker looking for a trek through the wilderness. This trek is a traverse so it will require 2 vehicles or for someone to drop you off and pick you up. This hike begins on the St. Regis Logging Road and takes you climbing up the Chairback Mountain. Once you reach the summit of Chairback Mountain you are at 2,219 feet. Once at the summit you will be treated to some of the most breathtakingly, beautiful views. Ascend back down the summit of Chairback Mountain to enjoy the beautiful views of White Cap and the many surrounding lakes and ponds. Once you reach the point of Long Pond Stream, you'll have to cross the stream which is about knee deep and uneven and slippery in places so use caution. After you cross the stream you will be at the end of your hike and need to be picked up or have your car ready. Hiking is an excellent adventure with miles and miles of thrills and excitement to entertain and get you in tune with nature.
