This hike from Cooper Pond to Nahmakanta Stream treats you to some of the most beautiful sights this area has to offer. This hike is some of the easiest walking in the whole 100 mile wilderness area. So it's perfect for beginners as well as those who are more advanced in their hiking skills and stamina. Two of the most beautiful campsites in the area are Antlers campsite and Nahmakanta Stream campsite. While you are hiking you just might get lucky enough to see one of the many bull moose which are known to live in the area and often bathe and play in the ponds. These mountain trails are also known for their abundant vegetation and some of the most beautiful scenery in the mountains of Maine. After a brief 3 mile hike along the shores of Cooper Pond you'll reach Antlers Campsite. Once you've set up camp continue your hike for about 5 miles to a point of land that overlooks Lower Jo-Mary Jo Lake. This is an excellent spot to take a swim and cool off or enjoy a picnic on the rocks overlooking the lake. This is an easy 15 mile hike through the mountains of Maine. The Barren Chairback Range is a rough and rocky mountain range that has plenty of scenery to offer the more advanced hiker. On this hike you'll be scaling the five peaks of the Barren Chairback Range. Side trails from the Range lead to several mountain tops; cloud, West Chairback and East chair back. The elevation on this hike changes dramatically between peaks. It gains almost 4000 feet no matter which direction you choose to hike. This hike is for the more experienced hiker looking for a trek through the wilderness. This trek is a traverse so it will require 2 vehicles or for someone to drop you off and pick you up. This hike begins on the St. Regis Logging Road and takes you climbing up the Chairback Mountain. Once you reach the summit of Chairback Mountain you are at 2,219 feet. Once at the summit you will be treated to some of the most breathtakingly, beautiful views. Ascend back down the summit of Chairback Mountain to enjoy the beautiful views of White Cap and the many surrounding lakes and ponds. Once you reach the point of Long Pond Stream, you'll have to cross the stream which is about knee deep and uneven and slippery in places so use caution. After you cross the stream you will be at the end of your hike and need to be picked up or have your car ready. Hiking is an excellent adventure with miles and miles of thrills and excitement to entertain and get you in tune with nature.
