The old saying, "You can't teach an old dog new tricks" might be true of Fido, but when it comes to people, Maine knows it's never too late to learn. Thanks to the efforts of a wide range of providers, Maine offers outstanding educational opportunities for those interested in refining their skills or learning something new. From hobby courses taught by established experts in the field, to traditional college courses, Maine's Seniors are in the prime position to "go back to school" and learn a few new tricks.

The The Maine Senior College Network , a consortium of 17 independent organizations across the State of Maine, serves adults 50 and over who wish to continue their education in a noncompetitive environment, where emphasis is on learning not on grades. An annual membership fee of $25 to $35, depending on the specific Senior College, earns members access to a host of courses from art appreciation to history. Covering nearly every area of the state, many of the colleges also provide access to free presentations and workshops. Tuition for courses (most as low as $30) typically includes all materials required for the course. Scholarships are available to cover the cost for those who need assistance.

The Maine Community College System provides free tuition for Mainers 62 and older on a space available basis. Lab and course fees may be required and some courses require the approval of the Dean of Admissions from the college. Contact the admissions office of the Community College you wish to attend to inquire about available courses.

The University of Maine System offers Mainers who are 65 and older free tuition for college classes. To receive free tuition, contact the Student Accounts Office of the Campus you wish to attend and request a "Senior Waiver". The waiver does not cover additional lab or course fees, and can only be used for undergraduate courses.

Mainers can also contact the Elderhostel program for assistance in taking college courses free, or at reduced rates. Elderhostel is a national network of colleges and universities that provide short-term college courses to seniors. You can reach Elderhostel at 1-877-426-8056 for details on programs available to you.

Whether you wish to pursue a new interest, or simply want to brush up on your academic skills, Maine offers a host of opportunities designed to provide seniors access to quality educational activities. So, go ahead. Sign up for that course you've always wanted to take. There is no telling where it may lead you.
