To hear the mainstream press tell it, Occupy Wall Street are as good as done.
WABC's Joe Crummey said that Occupy Wall Street was finished. Queens City Councilman Peter Vallone Jr called this most recent day of civil disobedience "their last gasp." NYC Mayor Mike Bloomberg said that Occupy Wall Street's latest move for disrupting the masses, shutting down Wall Street, and Occupying the train stations among other things was "minimal disruptions to our city."
Still, many in their ranks have been speaking up even more violently than usual. I was in Zuccotti Park on the day of civil disobedience and a man was one of the few standing there berating the system, saying we needed to "melt these (metal barricades) down and build houses!" Even more than that the seemingly listless bit who are still guiding the sails of Occupy Wall Street seem as mad as ever.
"The rich don't care about us," said James Frazier, 52, one of the union organizers. "There's no more middle class. I work, and I'm poor."
While his sentiment is certainly felt and understood by many, it seems that the motivation now is to pick ourselves up, dust ourselves off, and see if we can't make something more from our dire straits than a drum circle.
Meanwhile, the virtual chatter about Occupy Wall Street is getting more and more desperate sounding. One reader, " Negman " was angry that the ad seemed to downplay his generous observations of what was going on at the Occupy Wall Street day of civil disobedience. He posted on a NY Daily News article discussion group
"I heard on the police scanner in one of the media trucks that the NYPD estimate was 37,650 which means probably closer to 50,000. Yet, the Daily News doesn't mention that figure and even reports that the movement is diminishing. I get home delivery and we have a contract that they report the news. They have violated that contract. I will sue them in small claims court."
Are petty lawsuits and circular bickering going to be the next wave for Occupy Wall Street? Or can we all just appreciate what was and recognize what is.
