One of the first steps to keeping a lawn maintained is to water it on a regular basis when rain is not so prevalent. Depending on the soil, most lawns need to be watered every five to seven days. The climate in your area can have much to do with the watering regimen you set up for your lawn.
Outside of having a lawn mower these days, a good weed eater and edge trimmer are musts to keeping the grass look evenly cut and give the yard a nice crisp edge to it. Consistent use of a mower bag to catch the cut grass (and weeds) will not only develop good discipline, but will also reduce the chance of ever having to rent or hire someone to use an aerator on your yard.
Aerating is a method used to get through the thatched up grass and weeds that have been dropping between the blades of grass. Hydrogen dioxide cannot get through this mess nor can oxygen be delivered as freely when grass is not breathing well.
This does not mean you cannot make mulch out of your clippings, leaves and twigs. When you can actually see the dirt between the blades of grass you know you have done well. That is of course you have not over seeded your yard.
If your yard is over run with weeds, it would be best to call in a professional to spray your yard. This should be done once in early spring and again in the late fall. You may do this yourself. Read the label and make sure you are applying the correct ratio of mixture to your lawn. Ortho and Miracle Grow are still two of the best brands of weed killing pesticides.
Another item that should be on everyone's list should be bugs. They are everywhere, and there is no telling what all is lurking in your soil waiting to attack your yard at anytime. This sort of pesticide need only be applied once a year.
Unless you are overly populated with trees in your yard, you may want to refrain from raking up those leaves. Sweeping them from your walkway is understandable. As those leaves decay they are giving back nutrients to your soil. If you choose to rake them up anyway, at least start a compost pile so you don't have to buy fertilizer all the time.
Fertilizing is something that should be done on a monthly basis. If your grass goes brown then don't bother fertilizing since it has gone dormant.
One final note about maintaining your yard is just basic common sense. Check around it on a daily basis for trash that blows in from where ever it came from. You will find yourself enjoying your yard more than ever when you tend to it more often.
