Maintaining Blood Sugar Levels

Anonymous
People who have diabetes should always maintain normal blood sugar levels because any changes can result to conditions such as hyperglycemia or increased blood sugar levels and hypoglycemia or decreased blood sugar levels. Sugar is important because it serves as fuel for the cells. However, since diabetes is already present, it will be a little difficult to maintain blood sugar levels because this condition lacks insulin.

Insulin is responsible for the absorption of sugar in the cells. If there is not enough insulin, sugar will remain in the bloodstream. People diagnosed with diabetes may need to take insulin in order to maintain their blood sugar levels while others can maintain it without needing additional insulin and just simple diet changes. Whatever means, the objective is to maintain and normalize the levels of sugar. If sugar levels are high, it can lead to serious problems like diabetic ketoacidosis, which can cause a patient to be on a state of coma.

In order to detect the blood sugar levels in a person, medical professionals, specifically doctors, may use various approaches such as fasting tests. Random tests can also be ordered by the physician. Through these tests, a physician will be able to diagnose if a patient has diabetes or not.

Once diagnosed with diabetes, it is the patient's responsibility to frequently monitor blood sugar levels and maintain it in normal levels. Blood sugar levels can be monitored through a glucometer. This will help patients determine the current level of their blood sugar so that they would be able to do action about it. If blood sugar levels are very high, this will require a medication or insulin. Usually, people with diabetes have an oral hypoglycemic agent for maintenance use.

Diabetes is incurable and treatment is only based on the symptoms; thus, people with diabetes should learn more about their disease and do rehabilitative measures so that the condition will not be aggravated.

Prior to taking any medications for diabetes, it would be best to consult the physician first. There are a lot of medications for diabetes and it varies according to the severity of the condition. Aside from that, it is not also recommended to just take any medication without the physician's prescription. Diabetes patients should do major lifestyle changes especially in their diet. Foods that are rich in simple carbohydrates are not recommended to be included in the diet of diabetic patients. A diabetic diet or a prescribed diet is recommended.
