Maintaining Discipline in Your Homeschool

Brenda Hoffman
Whenever your child is home all day and you are their teacher, some discipline issues are at stake. This is only natural because it is so easy for a child to misconstrue their freedom and feel as though they are on a long vacation. However, this is something that you will need to nip in the butt right in the beginning.

Taking Advantage Of Homeschooling's Flexibility

While homeschooling gives your family a whole lot of flexibility, it is important to know when, where and how much to learn. These are decisions that need to be made in the beginning. If your child is too little to help you make this decision, simply chart out a few hours of the day and stick with it. However, if your child is old enough to help you make this decision, then take some time to talk to him and figure out when he wants to spend time doing school. Of course, parental discretion needs to be used to come up with a good timetable that everyone is comfortable with.

Teaching Self-Discipline

Children also need to learn about courtesy, manners and punctuality. Usually these things are taught in school through peer interaction without them really ever noticing it. However, whenever children are homeschooled these things need to be taught and corrected as necessary.

Patience Is A Must

Without plenty of patience, your homeschooling endeavors will fail. Children are really comfortable at home and there is nothing that you can do about it. This can make it difficult to discipline your child and make him an attentive listener. At these times the best thing to do is try something new. Maybe the two of you simply need to take a break.

A Final Word About Maintaining A Homeschool Environment

Nobody said that homeschooling is going to be easy and truth be told, it's not. It will require a lot of hard work and patience from everyone involved. The fact that homeschooling is so informal can actually work against you sometimes. However, if you take the time to establish some rules from the very beginning, your homeschool will be very successful.
