Maintaining a Healthy Weight

Why Keeping a Healthy Weight is so Important

Weight is a subject that is always on the minds of many people, not only for appearances, but also for the health risks that being overweight carries. Problems that can arise when dealing with being overweight for an extended period of time include, dying early, diabetes, heart disease, stroke, arthritis, and the development of asthma as an adult. When determining if you yourself are at a healthy weight, comparing your height to your weight allows you to determine your body mass index, or BMI for short. A body mass index of 25% or higher increases the risks mentioned above that occur in those who are overweight. Being overweight is a problem that is growing in America so rapidly, and is becoming a problem at much earlier ages than it has in the past. The patterns and habits of parents and/or adults are seen by children and have a dramatic effect on the habits and behaviors they learn at an early age and continue to live by into their early adulthood as well as adulthood.

Some researchers and medical professionals believe that all fat is not equal when it comes to be unhealthy weight. Weight that is gained in the waist area carries the greater risks of developing heart disease, high blood pressure, and high cholesterol. Losing weight is a battle that many people will face at some point in their lives, and finding the best method to do so will vary between everyone, particularly men and women. The easy way to look at it is the weight you gain is accumulated by the calories you put into your body and don't expend through energy. If you burn off the calories that you consume in one day, then you will not gain any unhealthy weight, most likely only muscle. And since muscle weighs more than fat, be sure to bear this in mind when stepping on that scale.

Genes, diet, and exercise are all factors that will play into how much weight you will gain in the course of your life. If obesity runs in your family, the chances of you becoming obese increase dramatically. People try to lose weight through all sorts of different dieting methods. Many who try the low-fat diets tend to fail because they get the impression that are able to eat as much food as they like as long is it low fat. This is not true because the calorie intake still exceeds the amount of calories that they burn off through exercise and activity.

Maintaining a healthy weight throughout your life is the easiest way to avoid obesity and other life-threatening health problems. Avoiding the need to diet also decreases your chance of failure at attempting to lose weight, therefore keeping you healthier. The best time to try to lose weight if the problem arises is at the first sign of weight gain in order to prevent future problems from occurring. Start your children with healthy habits that they can keep with them throughout the course of their life by setting a good example and teaching them the importance of maintaining a weight that doesn't pose a risk to their health. Make them aware of the risks, and by doing so, you may just learn a thing or two yourself.
