Maintaining a Message Board

Matthew Schieltz
There are many webmasters out there who would relish the idea of having a message board on his or her website, but the thought of all the organization and discipline that goes along with it can be daunting. With the creation of the message board comes the added responsibility of making sub-forums, along with how people are to create user identifications, as well as the rules of the forum. There are many successful message boards scattered throughout the internet, but then there are others that definitely need a whole lot of work. There are some simple and definite things that one can do to make his or her message board fun and enjoyable for everyone that surfs the net and stumbles upon it.

Create a Plan

The number one thing that you must do is to come up with a plan. As with all business ventures, you need a plan before you can even get started. With the difficult process of creating a message board with plenty of forums inside it there should be a definite plan of what to do. However long or short the plan may be, getting something in writing and sticking to it should be your goal if you would like to create a successful message board. This plan should include all the things that need to be done if you want to attract visitors and have your members keep coming back to your message boards daily.

Using Moderators as a Tool

An important item on your list in your plan should include the use of moderators. This is a big reason why many message boards fail to be successful because there are not forum moderators in use on the message boards, or there aren't enough of them. The reason that moderators should be used in message boards it that they will play an important role in the upkeep of the forums, especially when it comes to the members. If there is any trouble involving an action of one of the members, the moderators can either delete that member's messages from the message board or they can block that member completely from the message board and website itself.

Deciding on Sub-Topics

Another important issue that you need to consider is what the sub-topics of the message board will be about. It is good to have off-topic sections of the message board where "anything goes," but have a clear organization to the topics of the message board and having them being related to the website itself is equally important. For example, if you are trying to get a gaming website off the ground and most of your topics in the message board are about nothing specific in the gaming field, there won't be much attraction for the members to keep coming back. On the other hand, if there are forums in the message board that relate directly to gaming and the issues that face hard-core gamers and gaming enthusiasts, then your message board and website will more than likely be a soft-spot and favorite place to be among your audience.

Using a couple other techniques are also a good way to attract visitors. These techniques involve letting users create their own profiles, avatars, and icons, as well as letting your members be allowed special privileges that only members can receive. This might include a daily newsletter that you send out to keep your members updated about what's going on in the message forum or website. Being creative and using interesting techniques like that will open up many doors for your website and message board.

Don't just have your message board and website like another fish in the sea or website on the internet. Make it stand out from among the rest by having an interesting and creative website for your members and a good place for your members to chat with each other through your message board. Your message board can be your most successful venture when it comes to gaining member and visitors, so don't let it fall by the wayside!
