The Pittsburgh Pirates went for a pitcher in the second slot, again taking a high school player, and they have to be hoping that Jameson Taillon from The Woodlands High School is a player that makes it to the big team quickly. Two shortstops were taken next, with the Baltimore Orioles going with Manny Machado of Brito Private High School in Miami and the Kansas City Royals going with Christian Colon out of Cal. State Fullerton. Both players are expected to be good, but Machado is getting really high praise for being a big shortstop that reminds people of when Alex Rodriguez came out of Miami. Pretty high praise for him already.
The Anaheim Angels were able to draft three players in the first round due to Type A free agents being lost during the offseason. They picked up 3B Kaleb Cowart from Cook High School in Georgia, pitcher Cam Bedrosian from East Coweta High School in Georgia, and outfielder Chevy Clarke from Marietta High School in Georgia. That is quite a host of players from high schools in Georgia, and shows that the Angels must have big plans in store for some of these guys.
By the end of the first round, 32 players had been drafted into the Major Leagues, and now the negotiations can begin. The compensation round will take place a bit later tonight, and then the Major League Baseball Draft will continue starting tomorrow at 9 a.m. on the MLB Network. There are still several rounds to go, and the rest of the draft will mirror the order of the first round, subtracting of course the compensation picks that were assigned to teams using the rules of signing days. It means that the Washington Nationals will be selecting first in every round after this, followed by Pittsburgh and Baltimore until the final round of the draft.
The way that the compensation round works, is that if a team loses a Type A free agent (ranked as some of the best free agents) they get a compensation pick as well as a draft pick from the team signing him. That is why some teams lost their first round picks (like Seattle), and why some teams seem to have several more picks than others in the draft.
