Christmas is a magical time of year. Children enjoy Christmas festivities such as decorating the home and trimming the Christmas tree. Once the tree is home its time for the children to help with the Christmas tree decorations.

There are usually Christmas ornaments handed down from generation to generation. Some ornaments may be hand made by your children or grandchildren through their school years. Those are the ornaments most treasured in a mother's heart. However, each Christmas you can provide the materials needed and have your children make a Christmas tree ornament. This gives your tree a personal touch from children. It's actually a good parenting skill to have because children will remember this as they grow and pass it on to their children.

Here is an idea for parents and children for making their own personal Christmas tree ornaments.

Personal Christmas tree Ornament

Materials:

Construction paper
Scissors
Glue sticks
Separate picture of each child
Pen
Yarn

Instructions:

Have your child cut their picture out in any shape. It can be round, square or even use the entire picture. Some children even like cutting their picture into shapes of a Christmas tree or snowflakes. Letting your children decide for their self what shape they want is best. It gives them the opportunity to be a huge part of decorating the Christmas tree.

Next, have your child cut their construction paper into the same shape as their picture. Leave room for writing beneath the picture. Now they are ready to glue the picture onto the construction paper. Have children glue their picture on a different color sheet. It adds color to the Christmas tree and allows children to have their own color on the tree.

Have the children write their name and the year underneath the picture on the construction paper. Next, punch a small hole at the top of the construction paper. Run a small strand of yarn through the hole and tie in a knot. Your child's personal Christmas tree ornament is ready to hang on the tree.

How to Hang a Personal Christmas tree Ornament

The best way to avoid an argument between children when decorating a Christmas tree is to hang in order of their birthdays. Have children hang their personal Christmas tree ornament from top to bottom in the order they were born. This helps them understand fairness and shows no favoritism to one ornament.
