Make Cleaning Your Makeup Brushes Part of Your Routine

Nicole Lang
We use makeup brushes to apply makeup to help make our face looks its best? So why do most people not clean them? Washing your face everyday seems almost natural. Putting on clothes and makeup a daily routine. Why is it that so many of us do not generally think about cleaning our makeup brushes? Possibly because unlike your hair and your skin, makeup brushes are hidden from the world.

Not cleaning makeup brushes is as bad as not washing your face or in some cases worse. Makeup brushes are an easy target for germs and bacteria. They not only hold makeup that gets embedded for weeks, they are usually stored in moist bathrooms which are breeding grounds for bacteria. In addition, washing your makeup brushes will help them last longer.

There are many ways to clean your makeup brushes. These include using household items you already have to purchasing brush cleaners.

First, shampoo is a great tool for cleaning makeup brushes. It is generally mild and will wash the makeup brushes like it does your own hair. Simply dab a small amount of shampoo and rinse with hot water. Be sure to rub your fingers into the brush itself as you are rinsing to ensure all makeup and bacteria washes away.

Another option is vinegar and water. It might sound gross but is sure to get your brushes in tiptop shape. Simply use 1 part vinegar and 2 parts water according to "Cosmetics Suite 101". Essentially follow the same procedure as the shampoo but instead use the vinegar and water. This is probably the best method to remove bacteria.

Finally, most makeup stores or drugstores sell makeup brush cleaner. These range in price and work great. One that I really like is MAC brush cleaner. It can be bought online at www.maccosmetics.com or at any department store that sells MAC cosmetics such as Nordstrom's. It is around $10. Bare Minerals also has one for about $14 or even go with the ULTA brand for $12. Whatever your option most of these work fantastic.

Remember whichever method you choose, be sure to make cleaning your makeup brushes a weekly routine. It will help keep them in great shape and will keep your face free of dirt and bacteria and looking its best!
