Blankets are a must have for every child. Actually, kids need several blankets, especially in the cooler Fall and Winter months. Thin blankets, thick blankets, and throws are all essential.
When you go to your local bedding store you'll be shocked at the prices. Even department stores are asking an arm and a leg for children's throws. Blankets and comforters are outrageous. There is a way to have nice blankets without paying those prices! That way is to make them yourself.
To make your children a blanket first you'll need to decide what type of blanket to make. A thin blanket, a thick blanket, or a throw.
Next you'll want to take some measurements. Thin and thick blankets will be the same size. A throw is half the size. Decide how long and how wide you want your blanket to be compared to the size of your child's mattress.
Once your measurements are taken and set you'll need to choose your fabric. For a thick blanket you'll need some batting. It is very inexpensive and will give your child's blanket a thickness, and extra warmness. Purchase fabric at your local fabric store or at your local department store. Either place will offer you tremendous savings. Fabric is cheap and the blanket you make will last forever. Choose the color and pattern of the fabric according to the décor and color scheme of your child's room. Fabric is available in a wide range of styles and textures. There's something for everyone!
To make a thin blanket use two pieces of the fabric you have chosen. Put them together with the patterned sides facing each other. Use common pins to secure the edges and to keep them lined up and in place. Sew the two sides and one end. Turn right side out and sew across the open end. Add on lace or trim to cover the seem at that end! Toss onto the bed and watch your child snuggle up!
To make a thick blanket do the same as above except add in the batting. As your two pieces of fabric face each other you'll add the batting onto one side, on the outside. Secure with pins and sew it up then turn it inside out and such just like you would a thin blanket.
A throw is the same idea, except a smaller size. Throws can vary according to the fabric though. A single piece of a very thick type of fabric can be used alone to make a throw by simply just folding over and stitching the edges then adding lace or blanket edging. It's so easy and fun too! Thanks for reading and take care!
