Make a Diaper Cake for Your Next Baby Shower

Diaper cakes have been the "it" baby shower gift for a couple of years now. It is something that can be ordered from many websites, with many different customized features, but many consumers don't know that this is something that can be easily made in the home. I love crafts: scrapbooking, card making, and now, making diaper cakes for friends of mine that are expecting. They are not only a great focal point of the shower, but also give the new parents something that they are able to use.

It is a good idea to use infant diapers, as these will come into use right away after the infant is born. You can use as many or as little diapers as you would like to make the diaper cake as large or as small as you want.

Start with one diaper and roll it with the top of the diaper facing the inside. After the diaper has been rolled this way, make sure that it is rolled tight enough to look professional, and place a rubber band around the rolled diaper. The rubber band should be placed around the diaper, in the center - and all in the same place.

After you have enough diapers rolled, and bound with rubber bands you can begin the top layer of the diaper cake. Eight to ten diapers for the top layer will make a medium sized cake, as well as give the mother enough diapers to use for the new addition.

It is time to create the first layer of the cake, this can be done by standing the diapers up in order and placing one in the middle with seven to nine around the outside of the cake. They are pliable; a medium sized rubber band should fit around all of the diapers. The diapers can be twisted so that the end fo the rolls are facing the inside of the cake.

To make the second layer of the cake, follow the same instructions with twisting the diapers. There are seven to eight in the center of the diaper and than twelve diaper rolls on the outside of the center. These can

The bottom tier has eight rubber bands in the center than there are thirteen around the center, and there are nineteen diapers on the outer ring.

The next step to creating your baby cake is to go to the local craft store and purchase cake rounds. These are going to be the base for the baby diaper cake. These can be as fancy, or as everyday as you would like. It should be at least fourteen inches wide.

Place the bottom layer on the cake round and use ribbon to cover the elastics that are holding the cake together. Thick ribbon works very well.

There are many ways that you can stick the ribbon to the diaper cake. You can use a bow, or you can choose to use hot glue to attach the ribbon to the other side. Make sure that the ribbon does not get glued to the diapers.

Making your own diaper cake is a great way to save on a shower gift. Diaper cakes ordered from commercial companies can cost upwards of seventy five dollars. This is a great way to put money towards something useful that looks great on the gift table too!

Use a long wooden dowel to push through the center of the cake; this will stop the cake from falling over.
