We've all been there, you dig out your grandmother's favourite recipe, handed down from generations, only to find that it's a bit well worn and dog-eared. Or you pull out a trusty old cookbook to find half of the pages are glued together with an unidentifiable sauce. If only there were a way to solve this age-old problem.

For computer-savvy cooks the digital cookbook is the way forward. This software, available to download on your computer or laptop, allows users to collect all their favourite recipes in one place, which saves time and space.

There are a number of useful features for users to get to grips with. Essentially the software means that you can store and organise your recipes into groups and a search engine allows you to quickly find recipes. But once you are comfortable with the basics, you'll find that a digital cookbook makes tea-time easy.

Instead of flicking through a mountain of cookbooks, the search engine is capable of finding recipes by name, time needed for cooking, number of servings or the nutrients contained in them, and when you've found what you're after you'll see a detailed description of the recipe, preparation instructions, a list of ingredients and a picture, some digital cookbooks are even capable of showing instructional videos.

On a budget or looking to splash out, a digital cookbook can help calculate menu costs, based on entered ingredient costs, so there are no surprises when you get to the checkout. Plus if you are trying to watch your waistline, some digital cookbooks allow users to calculate the nutritional facts and figures of a recipe, with additional options of a diet progress calendar and chart.

If you want to spend more money, there are a number of gadgets available to purchase, that come with pre-loaded recipes with space to add your own. These come in a variety of shapes and sizes, and are designed to be taken into the kitchen. With much the same features of the downloadable versions, these kitchen devices are connected wirelessly to your computer, where the recipes are stored, but allow spills to be wiped cleanly off the screen.

Within the fast-paced world of technology, the digital cookbook is sure to evolve rendering the traditional cookbook a thing of the past. A quick search on the internet reveals that there are already new concepts out there ready to take the place of the cookbook and be the next must-have gadget
