There are many types of candles you can make and sell. You can hand dip your own tapered candles. Candles made out of natural waxes like soy and palm are extremely popular and sell well. Beeswax and honeycomb candles are a popular natural wax to use as well. You can create gel candles, aromatherapy or container candles. You can also make confectionery candles, which are candles made to look and smell like food items. You can make molded candles in any shape, or decorate your candles with anything from paint to flowers.
Some types of candles are more expensive to make, depending on the waxes and oils you use, but usually you can charge more per candle. Soy and palm waxes cost more than paraffin or gel, but will net you more when you sell them. The costs for your candle making products are relatively low, but you should shop around for ingredients like oils, fragrances and waxes which can vary widely in price. The overall costs for candle making materials is generally low, however, which is one of the reasons many people easily get into candle making.
You can make your candles at home, but there are legal issues you will need to deal with if you plan to have a candle making business. Permits, taxes, licenses and especially insurance are things you will need to look into. Insurance can be hard to obtain for candle makers, as candles are flammable. You will also need to look into the issue of how to label your candles properly to avoid legal concerns.
Anywhere you plan to sell your candles, be it online, at a craft fair, or other venue, you will always have plenty of competition. In order to attract customers to your website or craft fair booth, you will need to provide something special. You will need to create you own style that is unique to your line of candles, so you will stand apart from the rest. You can do experimenting with waxes, fragrances and techniques to come up with your own unique style of candles to sell. You should specialize with one variety to set yourself apart from others, and keep your customers coming back for more.
Expect to make anywhere from a few dollars to over $20 per candle, depending on the size, ingredients, and uniqueness of your candles, and of course, what your market will bear. You can also make more money if you can sell directly to a distributor or specialty stores.
