Make Fabric Sachet Potpourri Bags at Home

Cheryl Dennett
Sachets have been popular for a very long time. This is not surprising, since the small pouches of scent are nice to look at and portable, as well. They can be stashed anywhere you need an added touch of fragrance. Here are some directions to help you make fabric sachets to use in your home or give as gifts.

It is important to select the right fabric for your sachet. Fabrics made with natural fibers will readily allow the scent of the sachet to escape into the air. Natural fibers that are the best for making sachets include cotton, linen, and silk. If the fabric has a pattern, be sure it is scaled to the size of the bag. This means, use a fabric with a small pattern if you are making a small sachet bag. You can add interesting or pretty ribbons that are coordinated with your fabric.

Making a sachet bag is quite easy, even if your sewing skills are at the beginner level. Cut a rectangle out of the fabric that measures 8 by 11 inches. Fold the fabric in half lengthwise. The right, or printed, sides of the fabric should be together. Stitch down the the two long sides. Be sure to use a half inch seam allowance. You do not want the sachet bag to come apart because the fabric unraveled and the seams came unsewn.

Fold the top of the bag about halfway down over the bag itself and iron. This piece will stay tucked into the bag when it is turned right side out. Now turn the bag right side out and fill it two-thirds full with your dry potpourri mixture. Tig it with an 18-inch length of whatever ribbon you have chosen to match the fabric of the sachet bag. One-quarter or one-half inch width ribbon with work best with this size bag. Make a double know and then a bow with the ribbon.

To make potpourri especially for the sachets is simple. Since the ingredients are not in sight, it does not matter if they are mashed in the blending. Start by mixing all the ingredients in a glazed pottery bowl. Put the mixture in a brown paper bag lined with wax paper and store in a cool, dark place. It should be aged for at least two weeks. Be sure to mix the ingredients every two or three days to disperse and blend the oils. When the potpourri has cured, pour it into the fabric sachet bags and tie with the ribbon.

No matter if you plant to keep the potpourri sachets or give them as a gift, they are simple and fun to make. And, they are a very low cost item to make at home. Hopefully, these instructions will help you make all the fabric sachet bags you desire.
