Make a Fake Wedding Cake Without Using Frosting

Cardboard and Fake Dried Rose Petals Can Make a Beautiful Cake

Over the years the iconic wedding cake has become more of a décor item rather than something that is served to guests. I know for my own wedding and many others that I have attended sheet cakes were served so as to preserve the look of the prominently displayed wedding cake. Another aspect of wedding cakes is that they are extremely expensive whether they are eaten or not. All of these facts lead to the idea of having a fake cake.

There are many ways to produce a fake wedding cake. Many people choose to cover Styrofoam with fondant and then pipe icing on it. I do not possess the talent of using a bag and some icing to produce a beautifully decorated cake. Awhile ago I was flipping through a wedding magazine when I saw a beautifully decorated cake. It was covered completely with white chocolate curls and then accented with flowers. It was both whimsical and elegant. I realized I could recreate this cake using fake dried rose petals.

I constructed the foundation of the cake from cardboard boxes cut to size. I used three layers that were all six inches high. The base is fourteen inches wide, the middle tier is ten inches wide and the top tier is six inches. I chose to make the tiers progressively smaller by four inches because the petals will stick out and I wanted to make sure there was a definite difference between the layers. You can try using cardboard hat boxes from a craft store. Try round or square. The shape is up to you. Tape your boxes together so they won't come apart. I found that using masking tape is the best option. The non-slick surface will make it easier to attach the petals with glue.

Once you have your foundation constructed you can start gluing on the rose petals. Pick a petal that is supposed to look like dried rose petals. The brand I like the best is Petaloo. They come in many colors. I used ivory, but they come in white. The chocolate rose petals would look beautiful just like dark chocolate curls. Using a glue gun squirt glue onto the cardboard and attach your rose petals. You can scrunch them together tightly or lay them out more loosely. It depends on the look you want. I liked them glued together a little tighter. Realize that gluing on the petals is time consuming. A large cake will take you a few hours to do.

After your cake is completely covered in rose petals you can now decorate it. I chose to pin on my ribbon and decorations so that I could easily remove them and change the entire look of my cake. I was using it for display purposes at a store, so you may just want to glue yours on.

The total cost of my display cake was under fifty dollars. I used a bag and a half of Petaloo petals and just decorations from a craft store. Don't forget to rent a beautiful stand for your cake at your local rental store.

Having a fake cake is a fun alternative to having a real cake. You will spend a lot less and won't have to worry about having it arrive on time for your reception since you can make it weeks ahead of time.

  • Many brides choose not to serve their wedding cake.
  • Cakes can cost quite a bit.
  • Fake cakes cost less and can be just as beautiful.
No one has to know your cake is fake. Display it on a tall Caberet table to avoid having it touched by little fingers.
