Make a Feather Boa Wreath for Romantic Decor

Using Feathers for Shabby Chic Parisian Decorating

Cyndee Kromminga
Feather boas can add a touch of romance or spice to your bedroom, but I acquired mine for a much more chaste reason. I found three beautiful black feather boas at a yard sale a few years ago, when I was gathering and making costumes and props for a local school's annual musical. The boas were perfect for three flirty bird costumes I was making. After telling the owner what they were for, she charged me only five dollars for all three. I decided not to get reimbursed from the school, so I could take them home and craft with them after the musical.

I packed them away and forgot about them until recently. Feathers, birds, eggs, nests, shabby chic and Parisian decor are so popular right now, I went on a hunt for these feathered beauties. I wish I could say I am so organized, that I went right to them, but, ahem...that was not the case. Three weeks after starting my treasure hunt, I found them packed away in the back of a cupboard in a Victoria Secret bag. Hmmm.

This feathered wreath falls into most of the popular categories I listed. It only takes one boa to make one wreath, so of course I had to make three. This project can be completed in less than an hour (once you find where you put the boas, of course) and it uses no glue. If you decide that later you want to take it apart and use it in a different way (for...?), you can.

Materials needed:

12-inch Styrofoam or straw wreath
2-inch wide black ribbon
Floral pins
Scissors
6-foot black feather boa
2-inch wide pink ribbon
Craft wire
Wire cutters
Measuring tape

Note: I did not measure my ribbons ahead of time, so I do not know the exact amount I used. I am estimating I used 3-yards of the black ribbon and 4 to 5-yards of the pink ribbon, judging by what I had left on my spools.

Step 1
Pin the end of the 2-inch wide black ribbon to the back of a 12-inch Styrofoam or straw wreath, using floral pins. Wrap the ribbon around the ring of the wreath, overlapping the edges and completely covering the ring. Cut and pin the end of the ribbon to the back of the wreath.

Step 2
Pin one end of a 6-foot black feather boa to the back of the wreath, using floral pins. Wrap the boa around the ring, evenly spacing around the entire wreath. Pin the end next to the beginning, using floral pins.

Step 3
Cut a 24-inch length of 2-inch wide pink ribbon, for the hanger. Pin one end of the ribbon on the back of the wreath with the ribbon length hanging down. Bring the ribbon through the center of the wreath, to the front and around to the back. Pin the ribbon end over the beginning ribbon end to create the hanging loop on the wreath.

Step 4
Create a large 8-loop bow, using the same 2-inch wide pink ribbon. Cut a 12-inch length of craft wire to tie the bow together, using wire cutters. Tie the wire ends around the wreath and the hanging loop. Wire the bow to the wreath. Trim the wire ends.

Last Christmas black was in for decorations. You could add pink balls to this wreath and have a cute, different holiday decoration!
