Make a Felt Mitten Scarf Catnip Toy for Your Cat

Lyn McCallister
You can make a unique catnip toy using wool felt for your cat as a holiday gift (yes, cats can receive gifts!) using a scarf mitten theme. This project uses scrap materials and takes about 30 minutes to complete.

The idea is that this fun scarf has mittens at each end. You can add a little Velcro tab to dress your cat with the scarf for holiday pictures. It's okay to laugh at the mental picture this presents! If you catch your cat sleeping, you might just get it to work for a single photo. If your cat does not go for this wonderful idea, then simply use the felt mitten scarf as a catnip toy.

Supplies Needed:
Green felt - long scrap about 12-15 inches in length and 3 inches wide
Green checked felt or white felt - scrap for sleeves
Red felt - scrap for mittens
Paper
Pen
Scissors
Sewing machine or needle and thread
Dried catnip

Note: The above colors are great around the holidays. Feel free to use other color schemes such as winter blues or harvest oranges.

Detailed Instructions to Create a Most Unique and Wonderful Felt Mitten Scarf Toy for Your Pampered Kitty
1. Measure your cat's neck to determine approximate finished size. My sample is about 15 inches long.

2. Draw your pattern pieces using the paper and pencil. The arm pattern piece is a rectangle, approximately 12 inches long and 1.5 inches wide. The sleeve is a square, approximately 2 inches long and 1.5 inches wide. The mittens are hand-drawn and are about 2 or 3 inches long and 1.5 inches wide.

3. Pin the arm pattern piece onto the green felt, making sure one long side is on a fold. This will give you a 3 inch wide piece. Cut 1.

4. Pin the sleeve pattern piece onto the checkered felt, making sure one side is on a fold. Cut 2.

5. Pin the mitten pattern piece onto the red felt, making sure the long curved side is on a fold. Cut 2.

6. Pin one sleeve to the end of one arm piece, right sides together.

7. Sew using a ΒΌ inch seam allowance.

8. Pin the other sleeve to the opposite end of the arm, right sides together and sew.

9. Pin one glove to the end of one sleeve, right sides together and sew.

10. Pin the other glove to the opposite sleeve, right sides together and sew.

11. Fold the completed unit in half, right sides together.

12. Sew together, leaving a portion open for turning.

13. Turn the mitten scarf right side out through the opening.

14. Add some dried catnip into the scarf, if desired.

15. Stitch the opening closed.

16. Optional. Add a Velcro tab to the mittens if you want to fasten it around your cat's neck for a brief photo. Do not leave the scarf around your cat's neck for safety reasons!

Otherwise, present this fabulous handmade creation to your cherished friend and watch your cat go crazy!
