Easy Home Decor on a Budget

Looking for a great project to make out of a solid wood door? This folding screen is easy to make and costs very little. If you already have one of those great vintage wood doors leftover from your home or another project, then all you need to do is buy some hinges.

You can make this project in less than an hour. If you want to paint it or decorate it then add on an hour or two.

You can make this folding screen out of vintage wood doors, new wood doors, and almost any sheet of wood that is about the size of a door. The wood does need to be solid though!

This screen makes a great room divider, accent on a blank wall, and even a great way to hide the side of an old refrigerator in your kitchen!

To Make A Folding Screen Out of Vintage Wood Door You Will Need:

1 Old Wood Door (No Glass in it)
Jig Saw
3 Door Hinges or 2 Piano hinges
Screws
Paint (optional)
Paint brushes (optional)
Tape Measure
Pencil

The first step is to lay your old wooden door out on a flat work surface. The ground will work if that is all that you have.

Now, measure how wide your door is. Divide that number by there.

Now, let's say your door was 36 inches wide, and divided by 3 is 12 inches. Measure in 12 inches form the left edge of your door. Make a mark with your pencil. Measure another 12 inches to the right and make a mark. Repeat this at three different locations on your old wooden door. Now, use your tape measure to trace a straight vertical line from dot to dot. You will end up with three vertical lines running the length of your door.

Now, cut along these lines with your jig saw. Go slow and make sure you cut a straight one.

You now have three long then pieces of door.

If you want to paint your door I recommend doing that now. You can prime all three pieces out and paint them in any style you want.

Now, once any paint has dried you can install you hinges on the edges of these three pieces. I recommend three small hinges. One hinge should be placed in the center of the door pieces. This centered from the top to that bottom. The second hinge should be about 5 inches down form the top. The final hinge should be about 5 inches up from the bottom.

Install you hinges so that your door will make a Z shape when opened. You should basically screw one side of the hinge into one piece of door and the other Side into another piece of the door.

You can find a variety of hinges at the home improvement store.

Now, stand your old vintage door up vertically. It should easily stand on its own, but if you screen seems to be unstable then just fold the pieces in more towards each other.

This folding door screen is the perfect size to cover the side of a refrigerator that is not o great looking. It is also a great addition to the side of a desk that is rather cluttered.

To make the door a contemporary home improvement project then paint the entire door, including any hardware out in one color in high gloss paint! This will turn an old door into an interesting piece of art, a sort of minimalist look of what it originally was.

For a vintage look do not paint the hardware. Sand off some of the paint to add wear and tear.
