Make Glitter Pouch Gift Tags with Your Kids

Sew Gift Tags with Recycled Plastic

Cyndee Kromminga
When teaching a child to sew with a sewing machine, it is best to start out with a simple project. Make glitter pouch gift tags using recycled clear plastic from store packages, such as boxes of greeting cards or any box that displays the packaged goods with a clear plastic lid. Use this plastic with decorative scrapbook paper, wallpaper or any paper that has a pleasing design. The sparkle and glitter is enclosed within the layers of the stitched tag. This is an easy project for those times you want a quick and satisfying craft. Make several to have on hand for last minute gift giving.

This simple and fast project not only allows for a child's short introduction to the sewing machine, but also encourages the reuse of objects that overflow in our landfills. I try to look at most things twice before I toss them out. The fun of turning worthless trash into items that are worth something is a real rush.

Things You Need:

Old playing card
Pencil
Scissors
Decorative paper
Clear stick glue
Recycled clear plastic
Pinking shears
Glitter
Teaspoon
Sewing machine
Paper hole punch
Fabric scraps
Buttons, four
Hot glue gun

Steps to Make the Tags:

Step 1
Cut off the top two corners of an old playing card. This is the pattern for your pouch tags.

Step 2
Place the pattern on decorative paper. Cut out the shape.

Step 3
Apply clear stick glue around the side edges and bottom edge of the paper tag's decorative front. Cut a piece of clear plastic packaging, larger than the tag. Lay the plastic over the glue on the paper tag. Press to seal the edges. Allow the glue to dry. Cut the plastic with pinking shears, using the paper tag as a guide.

Step 4
Squeeze the side edges of the tag to open the top edge. Pour a 1/4-teaspoon of glitter in between the layers of the tag. If desired, add a couple of sequins for additional glittering sparkle.

Step 5
Stitch around all the edges of the tag, a 1/4-inch from the edge, using a sewing machine.

Step 6
Punch a hole in the top of the tag, using a paper hole punch. Rip a strip of fabric 1-inch wide by 12-inch long. Thread the strip through the hole. Tie the ends of the ribbon in a knot. Hot glue a flat button on each corner of the tag. Write a name on the paper side of the tag or use a sticker or stamp to add an initial to the plastic side.
