Make Glitter Ribbon Greeting Cards

Anni Sofferet
Using old calendars or pictures, you can make glitter ribbon greeting cards that look like locked diaries. The secret lies in using glitter ribbons instead glitter powder, because glitter ribbons have flexible metal wires running along their edges. You can then shape the glitter ribbons to fold around the cards, as if your glitter ribbon greeting cards are held fast by silvery snaps.

Even better, you can make glitter ribbon greeting cards with personalized messages by implementing a simple technique for making glitter hand lettering. Here are the steps I followed to make these glitter ribbon greeting cards.

Choose the Greeting Card Images

The secret to the beauty of making glitter ribbon greeting cards lies in the image you use for the card itself. I strongly recommend looking for calendar images, because they have the right thickness and size for making homemade greeting cards.

Make the Greeting Cards

To make glitter ribbon greeting cards it's important to cover the back of the calendar image with beautiful thick paper that will conceal the old calendar numbers. I recommend using watercolor canvas and gluing a double-layer if necessary. For especially beautiful glitter ribbon greeting cards be sure to glue the canvas face up (with the textured side showing).

Fold the Greeting Cards

After the canvas dries, Fold the homemade greeting card in half and press the fold firmly. I used the rubber end of my scissors to rub the fold until it flattened.

Make the Glitter Ribbon Greeting Card Lettering

To complete your glitter ribbon greeting cards you must personalize them with a unique message. First print the message in the lettering font and size of your choice. Next, trace the shape of the letters onto the back of the paper, by holding the paper up against a window in daylight. Then, paste a glitter ribbon over the letters and cut them out using the outline on the back. Here's my full article on creating glitter hand lettering.

Make the Glitter Ribbon Greeting Card Lock

Now put the final touch to making your glitter ribbon greeting card by adding a lock. Cut the glitter ribbon to 1 1/2 the width of the card. Fold the ends inwardly to prevent the wires from slipping out of the ribbon. Then enclose the glitter ribbon around the greeting card, overlapping it at the center.
