Ghost: This costume barely needs an explanation. Throw a white sheet over yourself and cut out eye holes: you're a ghost. You can embellish this costume by drawing on the sheet with markers. Draw spiders, cobwebs, or anything you think appropriate.
Deck of Cards: Cut a hole in the middle of the sheet for your head so that you can wear it like a gown. Staple or sew an old deck of cards to the sheet. You can invent many variations to this costume, for instance instead of cards use candy bar wrappers.
Queen/King of Hearts: Cut a hole in the middle of the sheet for your head so that you can wear it like a gown. On the front and back of the sheet draw with markers, as large as you can, either the queen or the king of hearts card.
Greek or Roman: The sheet for this costume can be done three different ways. Fold the middle of the sheet, place the folded part over one shoulder, and open the ends of the sheet to wrap around your body. You can also wrap the sheet at chest level like a bath towel or strapless dress. Alternatively, you can cut a hole in the middle of the sheet for your head and wear it like a gown. Whichever method you choose, wrap a thick rope around your waist for a belt. For your headdress, tie, sew, glue, or staple together leaves and twigs to make a circle, and wear as a crown. For a female, a gaudy necklace is appropriate. Finish off this costume with a pair of sandals.
Angel: Cut a hole in the middle of the sheet for your head so that you can wear it like a gown. If you have a shiny belt, wear it, otherwise, use a chain or shiny material, or even rope to make a belt for your costume. You can make your halo using aluminum foil. Fold sheets of aluminum foil into a circle to place on your head. The trickiest part of this costume is the wings. You can purchase wings or you can make your own. A simple way to make wings is to bend coat hangers into the shape wings and cover them with colored pantyhose, tights, or aluminum foil. You can also cut wing shapes out of cardboard and paint them or cover them with or aluminum foil. You can easily attach the wings by tying string on them so that you can wear them like a backpack.
Cow: Cut a hole in the middle of the sheet for your head so that you can wear it like a gown. On the sheet, draw or sew cow spots. Make ears and horns from cardboard and attach to a headband. Paint the ears and horns accordingly. For the tail, you can simply cut a strip off the sheet and attach it to the back.
With a little imagination, even if you don't sew or aren't very handy you can make a quick original costume for Halloween with a simple white sheet.
