Make a Halloween Headquarters This Year

M. Kaye Hash
Many parents worry about the safety of their children during the Halloween holiday. You can soothe your own parental fears, as well as the fears of parents you know, by putting together a Halloween headquarters. A headquarters can help keep track of everyone or give others a place to meet in case of an emergency.

Figure out where you are going to set up your Halloween headquarters before the scariest night of the year. You may want to use your house as the Halloween headquarters for your neighborhood or you may ask your local church or school for use of their larger facilities.

Decide what the purpose of the Halloween headquarters for your area is. You may be the neighborhood house where kids can meet if they are separated from their group or you may choose your headquarters to double as the trick-or-treating zone. Your school may let the kids trick-or-treat at tables set up in the cafeteria rather than roaming the streets of a less than desirable neighborhood.

Ask for volunteers to help you with your Halloween headquarters. Volunteers at a school or church can help hand out candy or direct kids to where they are supposed to go. If the Halloween headquarters is at your house then you may need a volunteer if you end up with several lost children or to help answer questions about safety to any parents who may ask.

Give out the Halloween headquarters information several weeks before the holiday. Give parents in your neighborhood or area information on how best to stay safe, a map of approved trick-or-treat house if you have one, and contact information for the Halloween headquarters in case anyone needs them.

Halloween can be a very fun holiday but it is important to stay save and setting up a Halloween headquarters will be a big help.

What an interesting - and useful - idea.
